Fishy story

One day a party of Americans was having dinner at the Ritz Hotel in London. They ordered fish and some of the (1) _____ (MAN)   began telling stories about finding jewels inside fish.

An old man who had been quietly listening all the time and saying very little at last remarked, “I (2)  ___  (HEAR) all your stories, now let (3) ____ (I)  tell you one”.

“When I (4) _____ (BE) young”, he went on, I worked for a big firm in New York. My (5) _____ (OLD) brother introduced me to a girl and I fell in love with (6) _____ (SHE).

It was love at the (7) _____ (ONE) sight. Soon we became engaged.

About two months before our marriage  I (8) _____ (SEND) to England on business. I stayed there (9) ____ (LONG) than I had expected, but just before going home I (10) _____ (BUY) a beautiful ring. It was the (11) _____ (GOOD) ring I’ve ever seen and I wanted to give it to my future wife.

One morning, on board the liner crossing the Atlantic I was looking through an American paper and (12) _____ (SEE)  an announcement of the girl’s marriage to another man. I (13) _____ (NOT CAN) believe my eyes. I got so angry that I threw the ring overboard.

A few days (14) _____ (LATE) I was dining at a restaurant in New York. While I (15) _____ (EAT)  fish, I (16) _____ (FEEL) something hard between my (17) _____ (TOOTH) , and … can you guess?”

“The ring!” exclaimed several of the Americans. “No”, said the old man. “It was a fish born.”
