I am a student. I go to technical school. I am a good student. I do well in all subjects. They say that I am a hardworking person. To tell the truth, all technical school subjects come easy for me but sometimes I have to sit much, for example, to do lessons in Physics or Chemistry, to write a composition or to learn a poem by heart. But my favourite subject is English. I spend much time on it reading books, doing tests etc. May be, English and learning it will be a part of my future career.

I like reading. I think comics and detective stories are much easier to read but I prefer to read novels - historical or up-to-date. In the evening I often read newspapers (our local ones) or magazines.

I like music. My musical tastes are different, but it depends on my mood. But I think every apple is good in its season. I play the piano and the guitar, not seriously, but for my soul. Sometimes I like to listen to the Russian classical music. My favourite composers are Chaikovsky and Mozart. I don’t like rock music, but I like «Queen» and «Beatles». Also I like Russian folk songs.

I have not much time to watch TV but sometimes I spend an hour or two watching an interesting film or a news programme.

I like fresh air and exercise. I’m sorry I have not much time for doing sports. But some aerobics in the morning, a swimming-pool twice a week, a ski-walk on a frosty day are of great help. Sports are fun.

I have a wide circle of interests. I’m very sociable, so I get a way with people. I have many friends; most of them are my group-mates. We spend much time together, going out to the cinema or to the disco party, speaking about lessons and music, discussing our problems. But most of all I like my family. We all are great friends and deeply attached to each other.

You see, it’s me – a person with his good and not good characteristics, liking this and hating that. But it’s interesting for me to live, to open new things.

Our family is neither large nor small. We are four: mother, father, a sister and I, Oleg. We all live together in a three-room flat in Krasnye Baki. We are an average family.

My father Peter Ivanovich is 47 years old. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes. He works as a manager at a plant. He likes his work and spends most of his time there. His hobby is swimming. By character my father is a quiet man, while my mother is energetic and talkative.

My mother’s name is Marina Petrovna. She is forty. She is a teacher of music and plays the piano well. My mother always has a lot of work to do about the house and at school. She is a busy woman and we all help her.

Our parents don’t always agree with what we say, but they listen to our opinion.

My sister’s name is Irena. Like our mother Irena has blue eyes and fair hair. She is a very good-looking girl. Irena is five years younger than me. She is a pupil of the 6th form. She does well at school and gets only good and excellent marks. Literature is her favourite subject and she wants to become a teacher.

Our family is very united. We like to spend time together. In the evenings we watch TV, read books and newspapers, listen to music or just talk about the events of the day. At the weekend we go to the swimming pool and we spend every summer at the seaside.

All of us like to spend our weekends in the country. We often go to the village where our grandparents live. They are pensioners now, but prefer to live in the country. My grand-grandmother is still alive. She lives in my grandmother’s family and is always glad to see us. I’m always happy to listen to her stories about her past life. Her health is poor and she asks us to come and see her more often. I also have many other relatives: uncles, aunts, cousins. We are happy when we are together.

Large family Small family

Advantages.

Disadvantages.

Advantages.

Disadvantages.

1

Large family

Advantages.
You have a lot of people, your sisters and brothers, you are not alone, they are your relatives that means, and they can only help you.

Disadvantages.

If it is not a big country house or manor, you have to share the room with you sisters or brothers, children always disturb each other, they always have quarrel.

Children have to share parents' attention.

If the family is not very, children have to wear hand-me-down cloth, have no possibility to go abroad, don't have many things, I mean, parents are not able to buy anything a child wants.

To my mind, theme must be a big manor to live comfortable in a big family. A big house, where everyone can have his own room, that means his own surface. It is very important. It is not convenient, when someone else lives in the same room with you, because you are constantly disturbing each other, you have no rest and silence, you haven't go any your personal surface. I think, it is good to have many relatives, but when they don't live with you.

Small family

Advantages
You have all your parents' attention.

You can wear new clothes and go abroad.

Parents are able to buy you many things.

No one disturb you, you have your personal surface.

You are not alone, because still you can have a lot of cousins and friends. When not cousins, then friends.

Disadvantages
None. Maybe that you have to care about your parents alone, when you are a grown up.

Letters from British journals and responses to them.

a. Shy and spotty

I’m 15 –year-old girl and I have a very serious problem. At my age I should have had a boyfriend by now, but I haven’t. I feel no one is attracted to me. I don’t know if it’s because I’m very shy around boys, but I think it’s to do with how I look. I’m quite spotty and quiet. I wish I could have plastic surgery, but I can’t afford it. Please could you help me?

Advice:  A recent survey showed that boys prefer personality and a sense of humour above looks when it came to picking a girlfriend. I’m sure if you asked girls they would say the same thing. Most people are shy in certain situations, and no one will think any less of you for being this way. And if a person has spots, so what? You don’t need plastic surgery – you need a serious dose of self-confidence. In time your spots will go. Remember, it’s not what you look like, it’s who you are that matters.

Tell your one Advice:

b. Dumped for a new boyfriend (to dump – жарг. бросать кого-либо)

I am feeling really angry at the moment and I just don’t know what to do. Ever since I was about three I’ve been friend with this girl, we’ve been through everything together. And now she is dumped me for a new boyfriend. I’m really sick of it, she totally ignored me all this week and has gone off with her boyfriend. I do have other friends, but I’m just so upset she’s just thrown away our friendship after all these years. I don’t know what to do about it now. What do you suggest?

Advice:  Try talking to your friend, perhaps she is so caught up with her new boyfriend that she really doesn’t realize she’s excluding you. Unfortunately, if your friend purposely chose to dump you for her new boyfriend then there’s nothing you can do but review your friendship. Ask yourself – is your friendship real? And remember, friendship change with time. Often the best friends we have from childhood grow up and away from us, but this is natural and normal. Other best friends will take their place.

8. Texts for reading

A best friend

It’s nice to have a best friend. A best friend stops you from getting lonely. He or she is someone you can share all the good times and the bad times with — and that’s great.

There are several school-mates with whom I am friends and whose company I enjoy. They are nice and pleasant people in many ways and they are interesting to talk to. But a person who is very special for me is my friend Maxim. I have known him for over five years since we came to live in a new block of flats and we studied at the same school. He is a year older than me and he finished school last year.

I think he is really nice-looking with thick dark hair, blue eyes and an attractive smile. What is more important for me, of course, is his personality, his intellect and attitude to many things.

He is a true and faithful friend who has never betrayed or let me down. I can fully rely on him and trust him completely. One of the most attractive features of his character is honesty. He has a wonderful sense of humour and it’s always fun to be in his company.

He is a first-year student of the Belarusian State University. His studies law which is his real passion. I am sure he’ll make a good lawyer as he is hard-working, self-organized, determined and has a great sense of responsibility. He is sociable, well-informed and well-read, besides he is fond of sports and music.

He Jives in the same block of flats as I do, so we spend quite a good deal of time together. We share every secret and understand each other so well that as they say we «finish each other’s sentences». Of course, we may disagree on some points and our tastes in films, books and music are sometimes different, but we never quarrel. He is tolerant and never presses his opinion and views on others. He is a good listener and always lets his opponent speak his mind.

Surely he is not an angel and has his drawbacks. He is stubborn and hot-tempered at times, but this doesn’t spoil our relations in the least.

I am proud of having such a friend and I’ll try to keep up our friendship as long as I can.

A real friend

We all need friends. Yet even in the highly populated areas, loneliness is still a sad feature of the lives of many. Friends play an important role in our life and although we may take the fact of friendship for granted, we often don’t clearly understand how friendships are formed. Every day we mix with hundreds of people, get on well with some of them and make friends with only a few. Some people have lots of friends, others are very reluctant to make new friends. There are people who are very easy to get on with, and there are people whose friendships never last very long.

In my opinion a real friend is a person whom you trust and respect, who is «a friend in need» and who never lets you down. There are no rules of how to make friends. Usually friendship between people grows when they have common views and judgements on things and events, have common interests and ambitions. A real friend should treat me with understanding, sympathy and compassion, exactly the way he wants to be treated by me.

In general, I have a very wide circle of friends, most of whom are girls. But only two or three of them are really dear to me and I hope I am to them too. My best friend is Victoria. We have known each other since we were first-formers. But our friendship really started when we got together at my friend’s place one day and talked about different things. I felt that she was a similar soul. We’ve been close friends since then.

Here I should say that Victoria is exceptionally pretty. She is about 180 cm tall with dark hair and blue eyes. She wears her hair long, sometimes she ties it in a knot. She has a straight nose and her pleasant smile makes her really attractive.

She is an energetic girl, good at sports, especially at volleyball and swimming. She is also fond of painting and some of her pictures are really good. She lives not far from my place, so we spend a lot of time together after school and on weekends.

She never speaks badly of other people and finds more positive than negative features in every person. I admire her for that.

I can’t say she is a top pupil in her class but she is capable, intelligent and well-read. She is good at science, while I’ve always been better at humanities. She is going to enter the physics department of the Moscow pedagogical university. I hope she will do well at the examinations and make a good student afterwards.

Of course, we quarrel from time to time and fight over small things, but we make up our quarrels in no time. We can’t stay angry with each other for more than a day.

She is a hot-tempered person and at times she tends to act a little impulsively. She easily loses self-control when things don’t go well or the way she wants them to go. This is the feature which I don’t find attractive, but I know that there are bad things even in the best of us and I have to put up with it. In general she has a charming personality, she is sociable, frank and honest.

She is reliable and never lets you down. I can trust her as much as I do myself. She never fails to help or share your sorrows. These are the qualities I like about her most of all.

My best friend Misha

My best friends name's Misha. We made friends a few years ago. We are of the same age. We live in the same block of flats, so we see each other almost every day.

Misha is a tall slender boy. He has got dark hair, large dark eyes, a straight nose, and thin lips. He wears spectacles. Misha is a nice guy. He is very honest and just, understanding and kind.

I trust him a lot, and I'm sure that I can rely on him in any situation. He never lets people down. Misha is only 16 but he is very responsible — he finishes whatever he starts. He's got only one shortcoming. He is a bit stubborn; nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with.

Misha's an only child and his parents love him very much. His father is a lawyer. He is the most brilliant man I've ever met. He knows everything there is to know about the law. His mother is a music teacher. No wonder Michael is so talented. He's got a very good ear for music. He likes jazz and plays the piano very well.

We spend a lot of time together. We often watch video or listen to music. Sometimes we go to theatre, or walk around the centre of the city, visiting small cafes, museums, art galleries, and shops.

We talk for hours about all sorts of things (politics, love, teachers, and girls). We discuss films, television programmes, books.

I never quarrel with Misha. But if there is some misunderstanding between us we try to make peace as soon as possible. What I like best about him is that he is always willing to help and share his knowledge, thoughts, and feelings. I respect him for his fairness, strong will, intellect, and modesty.

I miss Misha when we don't see each other for a long time. Without him I would feel lonely and uncomfortable. Our friendship helps me feel strong and sure of myself.

My special friend

My best friend is of the same age with me.

I have a wide circle of friends who are on the same wavelength. I get on well with them because I respect their differences. It is fun to be with them all, but my special friend is ____. I met him/her when I mixed with my friends once after school. We've become inseparable since our first meeting. I really like him/her and we get on well. He/she accepts me as I am and doesn't try to change me.

____ is tall (well-built, pretty, handsome, plump, good-looking, slim) in his/her teens. ____ has got an oval (round / square) face with shoulder-length (long / short) hair, greenish-blue (hazel / blue / grey / green) eyes and full lips.

____ is very responsible and decisive. He/she is determined: once he/she decides to do something, nothing can stop him/her. On the other hand, ____ tends to be sometimes bossy and likes telling other people what to do.

____ is an active and energetic person who enjoys cycling and playing sports games. He/she has an outgoing personality and loves meeting new people. He/she is also ambitious and works very hard at school to be successful in future. He/ she is intelligent and understands difficult subjects quickly and easily. On the other hand, he/ she can be sensitive at times and gets upset when something goes wrong.

All in all, __ is very special to me and I am always there when he / she needs me.

Theme 4. Describing people

How to describe a person in English: his appearance, character traits and emotions?

  • When we talk about face, legs, man’s figure, we talk about his appearance.

  • When we talk about a person's character, appearance always pales into insignificance. Because it does not matter how beautiful the man outwardly is, his character is the main indicator of the real beauty.

I. Vocabulary (см. Приложение №1)

II. Exercises

1. Match these words to their synonyms or partial synonyms. Each word can have more than one synonym or partial synonym.

Ex. bright – intelligent – clever

bright, cheerful, clever, difficult, elderly, fat, friendly, glad, happy, hard, intelligent, old, outgoing, overweight, skinny, slim, sociable, thin.

2. Look at these words. Do they have similar meanings? If there is a difference between the words, what is the difference?

attractive beautiful good-looking handsome pretty

3. Read the text and discuss them with your partner.

How important is it for you to be attractive? Although everyone wants to be good-looking, do you think beautiful people are always happy?

I don’t think so. For example, it must be a problem to be a very beautiful woman, because some men may be more interested in looking at this woman than talking to her. They think of her like a picture rather than a person. Some people think that very pretty women and handsome men are stupid, as a rule. These people are thought to be only interested in their appearance.

Some people believe that only unattractive people can be clever. But surely no one wants to be really ugly; and no one wants to be plain either — that is to have rather simple face that can be easily forgotten. Being attractive can help you find happiness, but it does not always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not to worry about your appearance. It is more important to try to be an interesting personality. Because interesting people are always attractive.

When we speak about somebody's figure, face, hands, feet we mean his or her appearance. A person may be tall, middle-sized or short, thin or plump. A face may be round, oval or square. In summer some people may have freckles on their faces. Old people have wrinkled faces.

People's hair may be long or short, thin or thick, good or bad, straight or curly. If it is long it is often plaited. Its colour may be black or fair, chestnut or red. Old people have grey hair. Women usually have their hair done at the hairdresser's.

Eyes may be large or small. They may be of different colour, grey, green, black, or hazel (brown).

Cheeks may be rosy or pale (if a person is ill), plump or hollow (if a person is very ill). Some people have dimples in their cheeks when they smile.

The manner of walking is called the walk (gait). One's step may be: light, heavy, firm. Old people often shuffle their feet, have a shuffling gait.

Answer the questions:

1. Why must it be a problem to be a very beautiful woman?

2. What people think that very pretty women and handsome men are stupid?

3. Can attractive people always be happy?

4. What is it more important: to be stupid and beautiful or clever but unhappy or an

5. Are you interested in your appearance?

6. What is appearance?

7. What can be people's face, hair, eyes, cheeks?

(for women)

My name is Ann. I am 16 years old. I study at school. Next year I am going to enter the university. I have auburn hair and brown eyes. I like to wear my hair long. I had my hair cut last month, so it is shoulder-length at the moment. My hair is straight and quite thick. I like to style it in different ways. My favourite hair styles are trendy ponytails or a cute bun. Sometimes I plait my hair or just leave it loose.

I have an oval face. It is quite slim. I have a neat nose and thin lips. I hardly apply any make-up. I think that healthy and good-looking skin is what makes a girl attractive. Many people say that I resemble my mom.

I am slim and tall. My height is 170 cm. I like wearing different clothes. I often wear trousers or jeans with a top or a pullover. I put on a skirt or a dress for some special occasions. I like to wear heels. In my everyday life I wear stylish medium-heeled shoes. To be honest, I have quite a big collection of shoes for different occasions. I think in the future this collection will get even bigger.

I am a very open and easy-going person. My lifestyle is quite active. I often meet with my friends, go to different concerts and exhibitions and try to follow everything what might interest young people.

I have wide eyebrows and a well-proportioned nose. There is a small scar on my chin. It is on the left. When I was little, I had a really bad fall and hurt my chin. Since then I have had this scar.

I am quite tall. My height is 172 cm. I am one of the tallest in my class. I am also quite slim. I go in for swimming.

Casual style is my favourite one. I usually wear jeans and T-shirts. I also prefer comfortable casual shoes. I often have earphones put into my ears, because I love listening to good music. I always wear a dark leather bracelet on my right wrist. I got it as a gift from one of my best friends.

I am a bit reserved person. Maybe this is the reason why some people think that I am not very friendly. However, I am a very friendly and positive guy. My friends know they can always rely upon me and I am always ready to help.

Answer the questions:

1. What kind of person is Andrew?

5. What does he like to wear?

Betsy: Well. I can give you example. I have a friend, Marry. Her features are very delicate and her charm is irresistible.

Ann: I have met her once. I agree with you. She seems a good kind of girl and her character corresponds to her appearance.

Describing people: traits of character

There is no doubt that all people have different character traits. Sometimes you may think that you know your friend's character well just because you have been friends for ages, but one particular situation can show how wrong you were. In lots of cases people just don't know who they really are and what they are capable of. Anyway, each of us has both negative and positve character traits and wants to be a better person. In life, there is a constant battle between these two traits.

As far as I am concerned, I am emotional and easy-going. That's why it is easy for me to make new acquaintances. Besides, my friends say that I am helpful, sympathetic and kind-hearted. Well, I am supportive as well. No matter how busy I may be, I will always be there to help if I am needed. As for my negative character traits, I am lazy and stubborn. Besides, I am too touchy and vulnerable. I dislike when people criticize me because I feel as if I must be perfect. Another negative trait of character I dislike and suffer from is my hot temper. I get angry very quickly and fly into a rage. Sometimes I even can't control myself when I argue with anyone.

If you ask me to describe a person whose character I like, I would tell you about my best friend, Anna. She is sociable and cheerful. She is always in high spirits. Her optimism always cheers me up. Besides, she is clever, purposeful and hardworking. She is an excellent student and already knows three foreign languages. Moreover, she has a wide range of interests. She is fond of music, reading and painting.

As for characteristics which are the least appealing in a person, I think it is envy and hypocrisy. Unfortunately, appearances are often deceptive. It is true when they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover." As for other negative characteristics I hate, I can't stand cruel and ruthless people. Moreover, I don't trust people who dislike animals. I find them cold-hearted.

Jacob: No, I'm busy.

Marina: Fine, I'll do it. You are being selfish, as usually.

Jacob: I'm not selfish. I'm busy at the moment. And you are stupid and lazy.

Marina: I thought we were friends. I've also helped you with lessons of French. Have you forgotten already?

Jacob: No, I haven't. But you don't have to remind me about that every time we quarrel.

Marina: Well, obviously we have different characters and views on life. Fred would never refuse to help when he was asked.

Jacob: Who is that Fred? Is he your new classmate?

Marina: Yes. He is a nice, polite and hard-working guy with good manners.

Jacob: You've just described an ideal guy. He must be really smart if he won your trust so quickly.

Marina: He is. Moreover, he is honest, kind and rather friendly. We became friends the first day he arrived. He never refuses to do a favour when he's asked.

Jacob: Some people are nice only on the surface, you know.

9) Texts for reading

  1. My personality, my character

I have both weak and strong points in my character. I am certainly a bit ashamed of my weak points and I do my best to get rid of them. As for my strong features of character, I value and cherish them.

Everyone tells me that I take after my dad as I’m a good listener and very sociable. I am a complete extravert. I love people and the world around me. I understand them and make friends quite easily. Being open and communicative means broadening my mind and my views on the world. That’s why I like meeting new people and talking to them. I always try to be an open-minded and adaptable guy because our world is constantly changing.

One of my best traits is that I try to feel as happy and cheerful as I can most of the time. My friends often call me the life and soul of the party, with a good sense of humor, although I may sometimes be kind of shy. Anyone can be down or depressed when something sad happens. But if somebody hurts my feelings or makes me angry I just tend to ignore him or her and approach the things from the positive side. I really dislike rude and ignorant people but I rarely lose my temper because of them.

I would also describe my personality as generous. I take pleasure in sharing something with other people and I am ready to help them at any time. I am organized and punctual too and I am happy when things happen on time, according to the schedule. I am very hard-working and I am always busy. I don’t like to give up.

I’d say that my negative and the least appealing qualities are obstinacy and perfectionism. Sometimes I set too high standards when it comes to choosing something. I am often a hard person to please. I’m afraid my choosy character makes me lose some nice opportunities in my life.

In conclusion I would like to say that my personality qualities are both inherent and acquired. When I think of myself I often get confused about how differently I see myself. I am constantly trying to improve myself as a person.

1. Describe someone’s appearance

2. Describe someone’s character and personality

3. Describe someone’s feelings & emotions

  1. «My appeaance»

My name is Max and I am 24 years old. I work as a programmer in a big successful company. I would like to tell you some words about how I look.

First of all, I am very tall. I am 193 cm high. But I am also very thin. I do sport and try to eat regularly but it is still difficult for me to gain some weight. Nevertheless, I am used to being skinny and I feel good in this shape.

My hair is brown and so are my eyes. My eyebrows are not very thick, many people think I pluck them, but that’s not true. I have a straight nose and an oval face. I don’t have a mustache or a beard. I consider it is untidy not to shave.

My fiancee thinks I am handsome and smart. Maybe she says so because she is in love with me, but it doesn’t matter. Her opinion is very important to me. She also tells me that I resemble her father.

Indeed, we have similar characters. My character is rather peculiar. I’m a man of mood. I am usually very sociable and active, have a good sense of humor and like joking. However, I sometimes behave as an introvert.

When I do so, I tend to stay at home and spend time alone with myself. I like wearing casual clothes, like jeans and t-shirts, however, I have to look formally at work. So I usually wear black trousers and shirts of different colors.

Words:

to gain weight – набирать вес

skinny – тощий, худой

to pluck eyebrows – выщипывать брови

beard – борода

to resemble someone – быть похожим на кого-то

peculiar – особенный, своеобразный

sociable – общительный

3. Describing Someone’s Appearance

Appearance is defined as the way someone or something looks. There are three main face types - square, round and oval. The most attractive type is considered to be an oval one. People can be plump, skinny, fat, and of average weight.

Frankly speaking, nobody likes a greedy, tactless, rude and ill-natured person. It's quite another matter to communicate with a nice, amiable, generous and good-hearted man.

Personally I am a girl of a character. I can be both cheerful and easy-going and at the same time thoughtful and reserved. It means that my mood is always changing, but still positive character traits still prevail. Speaking about my appearance, I'm very elegant. I don’t have a gram of excess weight. My friends say that my charm is irresistible. But I don’t focus too much on outer beauty. Inner beauty is much more important.
