The Past Continuous Tense - Прошедшее продолженное время

Образуется: was, were + V ing

Употребляется, когда речь идет о действии, происходящем в определенный момент в прошлом. Этот определенный момент может быть выражен:

1. Конкретным указанием времени Мама смотрела телевизор вчера в 5 часов вечера. —

My mother was watching TV at 5 p.m. yesterday.

1. Промежутком времени

Они играли в теннис с 5 до 8 в воскресенье. - They were playing tennis from 5 till 8 on Sunday.

1. Другим действие, которое ставится в прошедшем простом времени

Я разговаривала по телефону, когда пришла мама. —

I was speaking on the phone when Mum came.

Слова-указатели данного времени:

the whole day (evening etc.) - целый день (вечер и т.д.) all day long - целый день

this time - в это время: this time last week - в это время на прошлой неделе

Весь вечер она читала книгу. -

She was reading a book the whole evening.

Вопросы и отрицания строятся при помощи вспомогательных глаголов was и were

Вопрос к подлежащему задается co вспомогательным глаголом was
