CITY AND COUNTRY RESIDENCES

CITY AND COUNTRY RESIDENCES OF ELISABETH II

Кривец Марина, MCK311-2

Krivets Marina

The favourite Elisabeth II residences can be divided into two groups – located in the cities and in the countryside.

City Residences

Elisabeth II official residence was Buckingham Palace in London, which is England’s the most famous royal location as it is the official residence of British monarchs since Queen Victoria’s reign.

It was built in the early 17th century. The palace is famous for its outstanding architecture and stunning gardens. Buckingham Palace started as Buckingham House, a large townhouse which was built for Duke of Buckingham in 1703. In 1761 it was acquired by King George III for Queen Charlotte and was known as The Queen's House.

The King and Queen stayed at Buckingham Palace during World War Two. Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret were moved to Windsor Castle for safety. In September 1940 part of the East Front was damaged after bombing raids, and the Victorian private chapel in the south-west pavilion was destroyed.

In Buckingham Queen Elizabeth II carried out her official and ceremonial duties as Head of State of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh lived in the private apartments on the north side of the Palace, while rooms on the upper floors of the north and east sides have been occupied by other members of the Royal Family. Much of the ground floor and the south wing of the Palace are used by staff who work for the Royal Household. The State Rooms occupy the main west block facing the gardens.

Each time the royal family is in the palace, a `royal standard` flies on the roof. When the Union Jack flag is above the building, it means that the Queen is not in the palace.

Country Residences

Windsor Castle is a royal residence in Windsor, Berkshire, England. The founder of Windsor Castle was William the Conqueror. Throughout its long life, the castle was reconstructed and rebuilt for several times. The kings of the Middle Ages converted the Castle into a suitable royal residence. However, by the time of Elizabeth I many parts of the Castle were badly in need of repair. An extensive programme of improvements was undertaken throughout the 1570s.

Under Queen Victoria a new private chapel was created at the eastern end of St George’s Hall, and the Grand Staircase was reconstructed. The Royal Mews and riding school, south of the Castle, were completed in the 1840s.

During the Second World War, King George VI and queen were determined to remain at Buckingham Palace at the time of the heavy London bombardments, but Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret lived in Windsor.

In 1992 fire destroyed many rooms at the Castle. The restoration took 5 years to complete.

Today Windsor Castle is recognized as one of the most beautiful castle in the world. The Castle includes the State Apartments that are used today by the Royal Family, and the historical rooms. There are many famous, must-see moments within these spectacular rooms, like the colossal Waterloo Chamber, magnificent Crimson Drawing Room and impressive Grand Staircase.

Balmoral Castle, Scotland was built in 1852 by William Smith.

Balmoral is private property. It was purchased by Prince Albert, for Queen Victoria. Ownership of Balmoral was inherited by Edward VIII in 1936. When he abdicated later the same year, he retained ownership of it. Balmoral was bought by George VI, the father of the future Queen Elizabeth II. Elizabeth II inherited the Balmoral estate from her father and liked to spend a few weeks here at the end of the summer. On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral Castle.

Sandringham House - the Queen's private palace in Norfolk. In 1862, the estate was bought by Queen Victoria. The house was expanded in 1870 because an old house was too cramped for a family of Prince of Wales Albert Edward and Princess Alexandra of Denmark who lived there. After his death in 1910, the estate passed to Edward's son and heir, George V. There was the first Christmas broadcast in 1932.

George died in 1936 and the estate passed to his son Edward VIII. Then it was purchased by Edward's brother, George VI. On the King's death, Sandringham passed to his daughter Elizabeth II.

The Queen spent about two months each winter on the Sandringham Estate, including the anniversary of her father's death and of her own accession in early February. In 1957, she broadcast her first televised Christmas message from Sandringham. In the 1960s, plans were drawn up to demolish the house and replace it with a modern building, but these were not carried out. In 1977, to mark her Silver Jubilee, the Queen opened the house and grounds to the public for the first time. In 2022, following the Queen's death, Sandringham passed to her son Charles III.

THE STONE HOUSE «CASA DO PENEDO»

Меженская Маргарита Юрьевна, МЦК311-2

Mezhenskaia Margarita Yurevna

What looks like boulders left over from the Stone Age is actually a house built by the Portuguese engineer Victor Rodrigues in 1974. A stone house can be seen in Portugal, between the cities of Fafe and Braga. The Portuguese call it «Casa do Penedo» which means «Stone House». The house got its name because of stones walls. Also, wood was used for a house.

The height of the house is about 5 meters, which allowed it to have two floors.

Inside it looks like an ordinary village house: there is a fireplace, a table, beds and wooden stairs to the second floor. There is no electricity supply in the house.

There are several other buildings next to the house. Down the slope there is another building, but without windows which is used as a summer kitchen.

The stone house became a popular tourist attraction. Travellers like to visit the place very much. That is why, the owners of the house put up a fence and the house is currently inaccessible to public. Also, owners installed bars on the windows and bulletproof glass for protection from criminals.

However, a small museum of artefacts and photographs of the surrounding area has recently been opened in the house.

The first advantage of a stone house is its strength. Secondly, it cannot burn in a fire. Thirdly, it is comfortable to live in a stone house in summer.

There are some downsides of living in a stone house. Firstly, it can be cold in winter. Secondly, it is dark and wet inside.

FIRE STATION HOUSE: BENEFITS AND DOWNSIDES

Кунбуттаева Малика Исаевна, ЖСК311-6

Kunbuttaeva Malikat Isaevna

In the modern world there is a huge variety of houses. Architects or designers want to do something unusual and interesting. However, it is becoming more and more difficult to surprise people every day, but this is not a problem for a creative person.

Daniil Berg, a former creative director of TSUM, has an extraordinary personality. A designer's portfolio includes plenty of creative works, from clothing and jewelry to furniture. Berg's own house is also a work of art, reflecting the personality of the owner. The building itself is a former fire truck garage.

The point is that as a child Daniil Berg dreamt of a fire truck, and as an adult he managed to realize this dream.

There was a garage for 5 fire engine cars surrounded by trees. That is why Daniil Berg decided to install large floor-to-ceiling windows in it which give incredible views and make the room light. Now he can enjoy a beautiful landscape and silence around.

A special feature that makes the house stand out from other buildings is a mosaic on the façade.

Inside there is a huge number of unusual amazing things, since Daniil Berg gives priority to the items that have their own history. Now there is a Chinese bed that is more than 200 years old in his house. It is made without a single nail, like a puzzle that can be assembled and disassembled. There are also a huge number of astonishing handmade things in the house.

On the one hand, this house is beautiful and unusual, on the other hand, there were concrete slabs around the house, so it was impossible to plant anything on the site. Nevertheless, the owners managed to deal with it, and now there is a very beautiful plant area around the house.

THE OLDEST MOSCOW BUILDINGS

Никулина Анастасия Максимовна, MCK311-2

Nikulina Anastasiya Maksimovna

Old buildings cause genuine interest as it is always fascinating to know when and why they were built, who lived there, how they were used. The construction is caused by not only the necessity to have a home and perform daily routine but run business, entertain and work.

Churchgoing was an integral part of people`s life in the Middle Ages. The oldest religious building in Moscow is the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour of the Andronikov Monastery. To be more precise, it is the oldest building in Moscow in general. The monastery was built in 1357, but after 11 years it burned down. Between 1420 and 1425, when the building was rebuilt, it got its today’s look. In the 19th and 20th centuries, two restorations were carried out, which contributed to the renovation of the building and gave it its original historical appearance.

Nowadays, worships are held in the temple. And there is the Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art of Andrei Rublev in the monastery buildings. It is so because when the building just appeared, Andrei Rublev lived there and painted some walls.

The oldest building where people still live is Yaroshenko House, which was built in the 19th centuries on the basement of the 17th century. The house got its name by its last owner, Elizaveta Yaroshenko. This building was one of the flophouses of Khitrovka. V. A. Gilyarovsky wrote about this place a lot. In the 1920s all flophouses were removed. And after 30 years Yaroshenko House was converted into communal apartment. At present in the building there are workshops of artists, sculptors, icon painters and, of course, residential apartments. The building is under state protection as an object of cultural heritage.

The oldest five-story building is a malt of Simonov monastery. Simonov Monastery was founded in the second half of the 14th century. However, in 1930 the authorities destroyed it. The malt is one of the few parts that has survived. According to the documents, the building was made for the storage of monastery food supplies. For its time, this building was unique as it had almost 5 floors.

The oldest ambassadorial office in Moscow is The Old English Court. It was built in the early 16th century in Varvarka-street on the east side of the Kremlin. It is one of the earliest surviving specimens of Moscow's secular architecture and a symbol of the birth of Anglo-Russian relations in the age of Ivan IV (the Terrible) and Elizabeth I. The Old English Court Museum has been a museum since 1994.

The oldest shop in Moscow is «Yeleseyevskiy», founded in the late 18th century as a mansion. However, in 1898 the house was bought by the Petersburg merchant Grigory Yeliseyev who turned the mansion into a luxury store. In 1918 the store was nationalized and turned into «Gastronom number 1», but the people still call it Yeliseyevsky.

The oldest theatre in Moscow and Russia is The Maly Theatre. Its troupe was established at Moscow University in 1756. The famous poet and playwright Kheraskov headed this Free Russian Theatre, later named Petrovsky. However, the building burned down in 1805. After 19 years, when one of the merchant mansions was rebuilt, the staff of the theatre drove into this building. In the early 1990s, The Maly Theatre was given the status of a particularly valuable object of the national cultural heritage of Russia.

Built in 1832 and renovated at the end of the 19th century the Pharmacy of Ferrein building featuring Neo-renaissance and Baroque elements is Moscow’s oldest pharmacy. When the Ferrein family had to leave Moscow at the beginning of World War 1, the pharmacy on Nikolskaya Street has successfully worked from 1917 until 2000, carrying on this ancient tradition till the present days.

Cinema Khudozhestvenny is the oldest cinema in Moscow. It was opened at the beginning of the 20th century. Albert Brock, the owner of the building revolutionized the cinema because films were shown in ordinary rooms that weren’t built for sessions. This cinema invited viewers to perceive cinema as an art that should be watched in an appropriate atmosphere. «Khudozhestveny» had rich decoration, and was also the only cinema that delivered tickets to the clients’ houses. All the premieres took place here. In 1955, the cinema was equipped with the first wide screen in Moscow. Recently the cinema had large restoration works that restored the historical appearance of the building. Today this cinema still works.

LENINDRADSKY PROSPECT, 17: CONSTRUCTION AND USE

Фатуева Татьяна Сергеевна, ЖСК 311-6

Fatueva Tatyana Sergeevna

The building where Moscow International University is now located was built in 1935. One of the first four-storey schools in the Krasnopresnensky district was located there.

From 1941 to 1953 there were a trade school in that building. After that the building was reconstructed by the architect Timofey Ignatyevich Makarychev for the Higher Party School, which was created to train party and soviet leaders, as well as to train media executives. It was a pompous building in Stalinist pseudo-classical style.

In August 1991 it was decided to establish a new international university. USSR President Gorbachev and US President George Bush Sr. agreed on a joint educational project - a Soviet-American university. The first enrolment to the university took place in January 1992 and 42 freshmen started classes that year. The International University in Moscow is the first accredited non-governmental university in the country's history.

In the early 2000s it was decided to build a new academic building to increase the area of the university. In 2004 V.I.Loktev, a well-known architect, artist, author of many theoretical research works on architecture and fine arts designed an atrium, which has a glass roof.

These changes allowed to increase the territory up to 14800 square metres. It was an important architectural decision, and now the atrium is the favorite place of all students.

PROS AND CONS OF LIVING IN AN UPTOWN

Аблаутова Варвара Николаевна ЖСК311-1

Ablautova Varvara Nicolaevna

In today's urbanized world, cities are growing and new territories are occupied by them. Therefore, uptowns that are located rather far from the center keep arising. In general, the concept of `uptown` is typical for megapolises and refers to the areas which located quite far from the city center. Living in uptown has both pros and cons.

Advantages of living in an uptown.

Firstly, low cost of housing. As a rule, choosing future housing buyers are guided by a certain amount of money, and apartments in an uptown with their affordable cost are preferable compared to housing located in the city center.

Secondly, one of the main advantages of uptowns is silence. If you want to live in a peace and quiet place, choose an apartment in an uptown. It gives you an opportunity to relax and escape from hustle and bustle of the city.

Thirdly, outskirts are usually more environmentally friendly then polluted cities, as there are no plants and factories, highways and subway there.

Uptown residents have plenty of facilities and amenities not far from their dwelling. Moreover, the newer an uptown is the more developed infrastructure is set up there. There are kindergartens, schools, hospitals, shopping malls, playgrounds and sports centers in new residential areas.

Disadvantages of living in an uptown.

To begin with, uptown dwellers leave their houses early in the morning and come back late at night. As a rule, residents of uptowns have to spend a lot of time getting to work or study. Poorly organized public transport makes commuting long and tiring. Even having your own car cannot solve this problem because of traffic jams.

Moreover, houses in uptowns often old and faceless. In addition, most apartments in uptowns have small kitchens, low ceilings, uncomfortable bathrooms and a lack of storage space.

Furthermore, as a rule, in uptowns, entertainment infrastructure is poor, and there are very few places where you can spend your free time.

SQUATTERS IN THE USA

Кабанцов Александр Дмитриевич, ЮРИ311-3

Kabantsov Alexander Dmitrievich

With the rise of homeless camps and tent cities in many American cities, the issue of squatting has become a cause for alarm among many residents and policymakers. In many cases parks, sidewalks, and other public rights-of-way have been taken over by people living in tents or makeshift shelters, rendering the areas unusable to most area residents. In other cases, some of these homeless people have taken over empty businesses and homes that were left unattended long enough for squatters to take over. [3]

Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building. Squatting occurs worldwide and tends to occur when people find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. In 2003 there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Sometimes, squatters occupy public areas, such as parks or streets. [5]

In the 1820s and 1830s thousands of American citizens moved west to find a new life. Many of the emigrants dreamed of owning their own farms, but thousands of farmers did not have enough money to purchase land. Faced with the choice of remaining in the East or moving west and taking possession of land without paying for it, many Americans chose the latter course, broke the law and became squatters. [6] Also, there has been some urban squatting in the United States, especially in San Francisco during the Gold Rush and in various cities during the Depression of the1930's. [2]

A squatter should not be confused with a trespasser. A trespasser breaks into the property through an illegal entry and does not have utilities, furniture or any form of a prior lease. However, a squatter may have grounds for remaining on the property if they are able to provide evidence of tenant rights (e.g. utility bills or tax documents) or gain an adverse possession claim, depending on their state’s specific laws. If a squatter provides these forms of documentation, whether true or falsified, police will not remove them from the property. The property owner would have to take them to court to get the ownership issue resolved. [4]

In Texas, a home owner says she was locked out of her house by a squatter who claimed to have a rent after moving to the state with her family. In Maryland, a woman returned from vacation to find two squatters in her bed. They were not only living in her house but also sold about $50,000 of her furniture. It is a pattern being played out in many cities in the United States. Some squatters enter legally and then just stay. It is also common in Europe, where squatting has become a political movement. [1]

The best way to protect your vacant property from squatters is to select the right tenants. You should prioritize potential tenants with a history of paying rent promptly without any potential red flags, such as poor credit or a past eviction. Some great options include: Installing an alarm system. Placing motion-activated lights on your property. By taking these steps, they can prevent squatters from occupying and claiming possession of the vacant property.

«DWELLING OF THE FUTURE» IN THE MARBLE PALACE

Платова Дарья Николаевна, ЖСК311-5

Platova Daria Nikolaevna

The Future Dwelling exhibition by the GRoM art group is taking place from October 20, 2023 to November 08, 2024 in Marble Palace (the Russian Museum, SPb.). The GRoM art group presents 24 large-format digital paintings (up to 4.5 m wide and up to 200 kilograms of weight), which were created with the support of artificial intelligence. The works are printed on photographic paper and rolled onto large rectangular aluminium panels.

St. Petersburg is the first of the cities where all the works of the series are shown.

The GRoM art collective is an alliance between photographic artist Olga Michi, photography historian Alexei Loginov and art historian Artem Loginov. The art group was formed in 2020, founded the BÉTON Center for Visual Culture in Moscow, where various photo exhibitions of Russian and world artists are held. Olga Michi, the founder of the GrOM creative group, has already presented several successful projects to the public (`Vulnerable` and `Face of the Deity`), which depicted the issues of the past and the present. As for `Dwelling of the Future`. it has become a kind of closing element of the triptych that reflects on the future.

The digital paintings show the future people`s living environment. Russian Museum's `Dwelling of the Future` exhibition has absorbed the ideas of positive, harmonious life–building and shows new parameters of the future dwellings, the evolution and perspectives of the surrounding world.

T he viewer is offered to look at various rooms:

a library, a greenhouse,

a gym, a machine room,

and others. Visitors can imagine what will surround us in the near or distant future.

The Russian Museum was not chosen by chance. The museum is a leader in the demonstration of works by contemporary artists. Room has been adapted. The walls have been specially repainted in a neutral color so that nothing distracts spectators from viewing the works.

Also, the `Dwelling of the Future` is not only a reflection of future, but also a dedication to the Soviet artist Vladimir Tatlin and his project of a monumental monument to the III International. Tatlin's Tower can be found in all works, sometimes in a very unusual form. It serves as a symbol of the unity of people who face the challenge of the Future.

BUILDINGS FOR BUISNESS

PETROFF PALACE: A BOUTIQUE HOTEL

Ханнанова Наиля Маратовна, МЕН311-1

Khannanova Nailia Maratovna

In the 1770s, Catherine the Great decided to build a new palace, which would be used for short stops on the way from St. Petersburg to Moscow. It was built to commemorate Russia's victory in the Russian-Turkish war, and was named The Petrovsky Palace because the High Petrovsky Monastery (it is located in Moscow on Petrovka Street) owned the lands where the palace was built. Therefore, the palace is Petrovsky.

It was built by Matvey Kazakov. Thanks to the activity of the architect, the work was completed promptly, by 1783. Matvey Kazakov managed to create a unique architectural complex combining features of the Gothic Revival (torchlight columns at the main facade) and medieval Russian architecture (limestone ornament on brick walls). Many architectural elements, such as, for example, details of the facade, resemble the Chesma Church in St. Petersburg, which was also built by the order of Catherine II.

Catherine II stayed at the palace only twice: in 1785 she spent four days there on her way from Novgorod and ten days in 1787 on her way from the Crimea. In the late 1830s the palace was used as a country residence of the royal family. During the First World War, there was a hospital in the Petrovsky Palace.

Only a few historical features have survived inside it because of the numerous transformations. They are the decoration of the Round Hall and the four vestibules, the main staircase, and some furniture.

The restoration was done from 1999 to 2010. Now the Petrovsky Travel Palace is an object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation. However, the palace is used as a hotel nowadays.

Since 2011, a hotel complex has been located on the first floor and wings of the palace, while on the ground floor there is a museum. The palace is also the official Reception House of the Moscow government.

The Petroff Palace Boutique Hotel is a perfect place to accommodate various business events: congresses, press conferences, exhibitions, and meetings. The hotel has all the amenities: free parking, swimming pool, fitness center, free WI-FI, restaurant, bar and much more. Also, The Petroff Palace Boutique Hotel is not far from metro stations Dynamo and Petrovsky Park.

The Petroff Palace Boutique Hotel has 43 luxury rooms. The price starts from 11,500 rubles. Now the area of the Petrovsky Palace is 17060 sq.m, of which the underground part is 6785 sq.m.

The Museum of Moscow organizes tours of the Petrovsky Palace, where one can learn its history, climb the `Cossack Stairs` to the ceremonial halls of the Petrovsky Castle and admire the magnificent dome painted in the `grisaille` technique. You will be guided through all five state halls. The tour costs 850 rubles on weekdays and 1000 rubles on weekends. Certainly, this place is worth visiting.

SHERLOCK HOLMES’ HOUSE (LONDON, UK)

Петрушина Анна, ЮРИ 311-4

Surely, everyone knows Sherlock Holmes, a character in the series of books written by Arthur Conan Doyle. He lived in London at Baker Street 221B which is the Sherlock Holmes Museum and London’s most popular Sherlockian attraction. However, in Doyle’s time, Baker Street ended with 80 house, so in reality, the house where the detective lived, did not exist. When the museum was organized there were no proper address 221b Baker Street. Soon people began writing letters to the museum addressed to Sherlock Holmes, and to avoid postal confusion, city officials gave the museum a book address. Now this street has grown, but the real number of the museum house was still not 221b, but 239.

The current image of the apartment came from the very first series about Sherlock Holmes and corresponds to the strict Victorian era of the 19th century.

«We met next day as he had arranged, and inspected the rooms at No. 221b, Baker Street, of which he had spoken at our meeting. They consisted of a couple of comfortable bed-rooms and a single large airy sitting-room, cheerfully furnished, and illuminated by two broad windows. So desirable in every way were the apartments, and so moderate did the terms seem when divided between us, that the bargain was concluded upon the spot, and we at once entered into possession». – described Sherlock’ house A.C. Doyle.

In the museum there is a small gift store on the first floor, there is Holmes’s living room and a bedroom on the second floor. On the third floor there is Watson’s and Mrs. Hudson’s bedrooms. On the fourth floor you can see the wax figures of the characters from the books about Sherlock Holmes.

By the way, the museum walls are decorated by the photos of V. Livanov, starred in the series about Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson, because his Sherlock Holmes was considered to be the best and the most canonical of all Holmes movies.

RESTORATION AND RENOVATION

The Evolution of GUM

Кудряшова Мария, ЭКН311-1

Located on Red Square, the State Department Store (GUM) is not only the main shopping centre of Moscow, but also a great historical site.

The history of the shopping arcade goes back to the time of Boris Godunov, when the first stone buildings were built. During the reign of Catherine II, architect Giacomo Quarenghi designed the Upper shopping malls in the Classical style which was destroyed by fire in 1812.

New building was built in 1893. It took only three years to construct a great building in neo-Russian architectural style on the project of Alexander Pomerantsev, whose project was approved by Alexander III himself.

Vladimir Shukhov, who was one of the smartest and most creative engineers of that time, made a project of the arched glass roof. The openwork steel frame made of metal rods are a real artistic masterpiece. The building became a symbol of the growth of urban culture at the end of the XIX century in Russia.

In Soviet times, after the October Revolution of 1917, in 1923 the building was nationalized and renamed the State Department Store.

In 1953 the first fashion show in the USSR took place in GUM. At that time a well–known grocery store Deli No. 1 was opened and immediately became a must-visited place among both residents and the guests of the capital. There people could find a wide range of goods, including rare and exotic ones that could not be found anywhere else in the city. The opportunity to taste dishes made from fresh products purchased right here was one of the opportunities provided by Deli No. 1.

In 1992, the store was privatized. Since then, GUM has become a place where the world's best brands of clothing, shoes and accessories present their products, as well as offer their guests upscale restaurants and cafes.

Nowadays plenty of shops are located in the building. GUM is a grand shopping mall offering its visitors a wide range of goods and services. GUM is not just a shopping center, it is the main attraction for tourists and Muscovites, a venue for cultural and entertainment events. Boutiques of many world brands, as well as Russian designers are represented here.

There is a Cinema Hall in GUM. Located in the heart of the building, it differs from ordinary cinemas with its stylish and refined design. The interior combines modern elements and details that remind of old cinemas.

Also, in GUM there is a historic toilet which is a real attraction due to its early XX century interior design. White marble trim, forged elements, glass chandeliers and high doors create a feeling of time travelling.

The state Department Store is not just a commercial facility located in the heart of Russia. It has a symbolic meaning, being a witness and participant in a significant period of Russian history. Thanks to its majestic architecture and luxurious shops, it preserves the spirit of past eras, while retaining its importance in the modern world.

GUM is famous for its history, a unique atmosphere, opportunities for shopping and recreation.

The Renovation Process of `Khrushchev`

Романская Дарья Дмитриевна, группа

Romanskaya Darya Dmitrievna

Renovation involves the process of improvement, reconstruction, restoration without destroying the integrity of the structure.

Nowadays, buildings that require renovation are the Khrushchevs which were built in 1960s.

Moscow government has been planning to renovate the Khrushchevs since their service life (which actually is 50 years) is being over at the end of XX century.

Most of the Khrushchevs are four and five-story buildings whose utility systems are destroying and should be maintained.

Renovation of the Khrushchevs began in Moscow in 2017. Old houses are massively destroyed; their residents are relocated into modern comfortable houses. Muscovites receive apartments in new flats, which do not require additional repairing.

The renovation programme includes the construction of social infrastructure facilities: schools, kindergartens, polyclinics and leisure facilities, as well as the development of the transport network. Modern standards of landscaping will be applied in the renovation neighbourhoods: local parks, modern sports and children's playgrounds, bicycle paths will be created.

In 2023 the resettlement in new houses began with residents of seven districts and settlements of the Southern part of Moscow. In the districts Molzhaninovsky, Severny and in Sosenskoye settlement the renovation programme has been completed. As Sergey Levkin, Head of the Department of Urban Planning Policy of Moscow, reported, a total of 277 new buildings with the area of 3.9 million square metres have been commissioned in the capital, 256 of them have been handed over for occupancy. 140 thousand people are moving into new flats.

Оn the website of Moscow government in the category City projects you can find a link to the renovation section with a detailed description of how the new areas will be landscaped. The construction of polyclinics, educational institutions and shops within walking distance is also included in the plans. There is also an opportunity to see the interior of future flats.

HOME IN LITERATURE

A DESCRIPTION OF A CHARACTER`S HOME

IN BELLETRISTIC LITERATURE: AIMS AND PURPOSES

Коробок Александр Александрович, ФМЛ311-2

Korobok Artyom Aleksandrovich

A short description of a dwelling can tell about characters` personality and background as much as a long narrative. By discussing the choice, they make in decor, furniture, nick-nacks, cleanliness, you as writer speak volumes about the motivations and core of the people in your book, develop empathy with the reader, and make them likable or feared. Sometimes, a character’s residence provides the opportunity to know a lot about him or her without any narrative.

Fiction writers describe their characters` places of residence to achieve different goals.

Firstly, to express coziness and security as home is a place where people feel comfortable and safe. Home is a place where characters are safe and sound. It is a place to relax and spend time with nearest and dearest. It can be a symbol of an ideal environment.

Secondly, as far as home is a location where family dramas and conflicts as well as happy family moments take place, writers describe home to make their stories more expressive.

Moreover, a dwelling provides insight into characters' cultural, social, or national identity and their belonging to a particular place or community.

It is known that home is a very special place that reflects a character`s personality, personal preferences and a lifestyle as people decorate their homes in ways that make them comfortable with life. The interior might relax people, motivate, be their hide-out from humanity and the threats of the world. It will always reflect their values, beliefs, family, passions.

That is why, in any literary work a description of home plays an important role as it helps more accurately and vividly express the characters` personal traits.

A RESIDENCE AS A REFLECTION OF A CHARACTER

Ивченко Арина Сергеевна, РИК 312-1

Англ

Even though the majority of people thinks that movies and the literature are two completely different things, it is not absolutely true. Actually, writers and filmmakers often use the same tips but apply them in slightly different ways. If you are attentive enough while watching a film or reading a book, you can notice the same tricks used by both screenwriters and novelists. It obviously applies to the descriptions of residences and houses of characters because they help reveal personal traits of heroes.

Here are some common tips used for revealing characters in movies and the literature.

1. Colours

Colour is used for presenting a certain emotion. For example, red usually refers to anger or romance, green - to nature, hope or potion, blue - to wisdom, stability or sadness, and black - to hopelessness or loneliness.

For example, well-known yellow wallpapers in Raskolnikov’s room, that F.M. Dostoevsky describes as `yellow dusty wallpaper peeling off the walls that gave it a wretchedly shabby appearance`, gives the feeling of anxiety and sadness.

The same tip applies to colours in `La La Land`. Damien Chazelle shows the tension between two main characters using turquoise colour and low light. They symbolize misunderstanding and looming challenges in their relationship. A little bit later main characters have an argument while something is burning in the kitchen.

2. Details

Another useful tip for revealing a character is highlighting important details. The meal that is burning in the kitchen while Mia and Sebastian are arguing is an element that enhances the expression of a scene. This detail helps us understand the tension between characters better.

Some features in characters` dwellings help show their personal traits. For example, M. Gogol frequently use this tip in his `Dead souls`. For example, `…the courtyard was enclosed by a strong and very high wooden fence, and both the stables, the coach-house, and the culinary premises were partially constructed of beams warranted to last for centuries`. This description of Sobakevitch’s house shows the social status of its owner and says a lot about him.

3. Space and Mood

Let`s start with `Encanto` by Disney. Space is used to show both characters and relationships between them. For example, Mirabel`s living room is quite dark, cramped and untidy. However, her little cousin’s room is huge, spacious and extremely magic. Just by comparing these two rooms we understand that Mirabel is probably quite far away from the family business.

The house, which is called `casita`, refers to their family relationship. In the begging the bright house is full of different people and warm light. In the end the house is ruined and demonstrates troubles.

Moreover, candles usually become dimmer when the family is arguing and go out when the family relationship is completely broken.

To conclude, authors always try to invent new ways of revealing their characters with the help of residences because they are a reflection of a hero.

THE FATE OF HOUSES AS A REFLECTION OF CHARACTERS` FATE ON THE EXAMPLE OF

EDWARD ROCHESTER`S AND SCARLETT O'HARA`S LODGINGS

Сергеева Мария Викторовна, Чагинава Мариам Георгиевна, ФМЛ311-2

Sergeeva Maria Viktorovna, Chaginava Mariam Georgievna

From time immemorial, the books have revealed the intriguing fate of the heroes. Nevertheless, just a few people think about fiction characters` residences that sometimes anticipate or replicate their fates.

Such examples can be found in the world bestsellers - `Jane Eyre` by Charlotte Bronte and `Gone with the Wind` by Margaret Mitchell, which managed to conquer lots of readers.

In the novel `Jane Eyre` Charlotte Bronte described a grievous fate of the Thornfield Hall estate as a symbol of tragic ordeals that its owner Edward Rochester had to go through.

The author characterizes Rochester as a somber and ugly man. «His figure was enveloped in a riding cloak, fur collared and steel clasped; its details were not apparent, but I traced the general points of middle height and considerable breadth of chest. He had a dark face, with stern features and a heavy brow; his eyes and gathered eyebrows looked ireful and thwarted just now; he was past youth, but had not reached middle-age…» [1, p.173]. The description showed that he really is a mysterious person with his own secrets.

Rochester`s residence Thornfield Hall is a reflection of its owner. It is as mysterious and gloomy as Rochester himself. «It was three storeys high, of proportions not vast, though considerable: a gentleman's manor-house, not a nobleman's seat: battlements round the top gave it a picturesque look. Its grey front stood out well from the background of a rookery, whose cawing tenants were now on the wing: they flew over the lawn and grounds Ito alight in a great meadow, from which these were separated by a sunk fence, and where an array of mighty old thorn trees, strong, knotty, and broad as oaks, at once explained the etymology of the mansion's designation…» [1, p. 151]

The gloomy appearance of the manor shows the reader that Mr. Rochester does not want to tell the secrets of his private life.

The interior of the manor is rich and solemn, but old-fashioned. Jane Eyre says that «…pictures on the walls (one, I remember, represented a grim man in a cuirass, and one a lady with powdered hair and a pearl necklace), at a bronze lamp pendent from the ceiling, at a great clock whose case was of oak curiously carved, and ebon black with time and rubbing. Everything appeared very stately and imposing to me; but then I was so little accustomed to grandeur» [1, p.151]. Edward Rochester resembles his furniture; not young, but still look mesmerizing.

The gruesome fate befell both Thornfield Hall and Edward Rochester.

Mr. Rochester`s wife Bertha, who was mentally ill set fire to the mansion. The building was destroyed: «…I saw a blackened ruin. The lawn, the grounds were trodden and waste: the portal yawned void. The front was, as I had once seen it in a dream, but a well-like wall, very high and very fragile-looking, perforated with paneless windows: no roof, no battlements, no chimneys all had crashed in» [1, p.648]. Unfortunately, the fire also affected Mr. Rochester. He lost his arm and became blind.

In «Gone with the Wind» Margaret Mitchell gave a detailed description of Tara – an estate which was founded by an Irish immigrant Gerald O'Hara. In «Gone with the Wind» Tara is a symbol of patriotism and loyalty to the Motherland.

Manor house in Tara is a typical colonial-style building with a white facade outside and a magnificent staircase upstairs inside which emphasizes its owners’ high status. Tara is a beloved home for Scarlett O'Hara, the main character of the novel. Scarlett adores her home and her land. She feels protected being at home. «Seated with Stuart and Brent Tarleton in the cool shade of the porch of Tara, her father's plantation, that bright April afternoon of 1861, she made a pretty picture». [2. p. 2]

Both Scarlett and a manor house are stunning and elegant. Describing Scarlett, the author says: «Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm as the Tarleton twins were. In her face were too sharply blended the delicate features of her mother, a Coast aristocrat of French descent, and the heavy ones of her florid Irish father» [2, p. 2].

Spoiled and wayward, confident in her irresistibility, Scarlett could have lived the life of a «true lady», attend balls and go hunting, farm the plantation, break the hearts of all men who inadvertently looked into her green eyes, but all this was not destined to come true: The Civil War began.

The estate was destroyed as well as Scarlett`s life. However, the troubles and misfortunes turned a gentle young lady, flirtatious and capricious Scarlett into a strong and decisive person who takes responsibility for her house, which she values so much and becomes a really mature conscious lady. VICTORIAN HOUSES (FROM `BLEAK HOUSE` AND

'DAVID COPPERFIELD' BY CHARLES DICKENS)

Ломакина Дарья Владимировна, ФМЛ311- 1

Charles Dickens, an English novelist and social critic, created some of the world's best-known fictional characters. His works gained popularity during his lifetime and are read today. He is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His novels are full of the descriptions of everyday life and living conditions in the Victorian era.

In « Bleak House» the heroine Esther Sommerson gives a scrupulous description of the house.

«It was one of those delightfully irregular houses where you go up and down steps out of one room into another, and where you come upon more rooms when you think you have seen all there are, and where there is a bountiful provision of little halls and passages, and where you find still older cottage-rooms in unexpected places with lattice windows and green growth pressing ng through them. Mine, which we entered first, was of this kind, with an up-and- down roof that had more corners in it than I ever counted afterwards and a chimney (there was a wood fire on the hearth) paved all around with pure white tiles, in every one of which a bright miniature of the fire was blazing. Out of this room, you went down two steps into a charming little sitting- room looking down upon a flower-garden, which room was henceforth to belong to Ada and me. Out of this you went up three steps into Ada's bedroom, which had a fine broad wind ow commanding a beautiful view (we saw a great expanse of darkness lying ng underneath the stars), to which there was a hollow window-seat, in which, with a spring-lock, three dear Ada`s might have been lost at once. Out of this room you passed into a little gallery, with which the other best rooms (only two) communicated, and so, by a little staircase of shallow steps with a number of corner stairs in it, considering its length, down into the hall. But if instead of going out at Ada's door you came back into my room, and went out at the door by which you had entered it, and turned up a few crooked steps that branched off in an unexpected manner from the stairs, you lost yourself in passages, with mangles in them, and three-cornered tables, and a native Hindu chair, which was also a sofa, a box, and a bedstead, and looked in every form something between a bamboo skeleton and a great bird-cage, and had been brought from India nobody knew by whom or when. From these you came on Richard's room, which was part library, part sitting-room, part bedroom, and seemed indeed a comfortable compound of man y rooms. Out of that you went straight, with a little interval of passage, to the plain room where Mr. Jarndyce slept all the year round, with his window open, his bedstead without any furniture standing in the middle of the floor for more air, and his cold bath gaping for him in a smaller room adjoining. Out of that you came into another passage, where there were backstairs and where you could hear the horses being rubbed down outside the stable and being told to «Hold up» and «Get over» as they slipped about very much on the uneven stones. Or you might, if you came out at another door (every room had at least two doors), go straight down to the hall again by half-a dozen steps and a low archway».

Esther Sommerson adores antique furnishings, its charming quaintness, nooks and corridors and tiled ceilings. All these things create an atmosphere of warmth and light, kindness and hospitality.

The detailed description of every detail in the Cold House, where the heroes have just arrived, immerse a reader into the atmosphere of the Victorian Era.

Another example of Victorian dwelling is a warm, cozy house described in the novel «David Copperfield». It is a room of a red-cheeked girl Janet, a pupil of his aunt Betty Trotwood.

«The room was as neat as Janet or my aunt. As I laid down my pen, a moment since, to think of it, the air from the sea came blowing in again, mixed with the perfume of the flowers; and I saw the old-fashioned furniture brightly rubbed and polished, my aunt's inviolable chair and table by the round green fan in the bow-window, a carpet, a cat, a kettle-holder, two canaries, an old china, a punchbowl full of dried rose leaves, a tall press guarding all sorts of bottles and pots, and, wonderfully out of keeping with the rest, my dusty self upon the sofa, taking note of everything».

This room symbolizes the lightness, unprecedented simplicity, and pleasant atmosphere of a close relative's house. It is very pleasant to be in a room where you are at ease. In just a couple of sentences the author conveys to us the charming simplicity of this place, using such epithets as old-fashioned, inviolable.

A HOBBIT`S HOUSE (FROM J.R.R. TOLKIEN NOVELS)

Савина Анна Вадимовна, Кострова Камилла Александровна, ФМЛ311-

англ

Let us plunge you into the atmosphere of the novel by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien "The Hobbit, or There and Back", the story of Bilbo Baggins` journey which begins in Shire, where he lives.

Have you ever noticed that the dwellings of the heroes of fairy tales are an example of coziness and comfort? A hobbit's house is no exception. The description of the burrow has fascinated and captivated everyone since childhood.

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."

A green hill was turned into a nice and cozy, and very spacious multi-room comfortable dwelling, with long corridors, round windows and a luxurious fireplace. Hobbits dislike stairs, that is why they have a network of tunnels in their burrows.

"The door opened on to a tube-shaped hall like a tunnel: a very comfortable tunnel without smoke, with panelled walls, and floors tiled and carpeted, provided with polished chairs, and lots and lots of pegs for hats and coats - the hobbit was fond of visitors."

Also, there are lot of rooms, (mostly closets and wardrobes) in Hobbits` dwellings.

"The best rooms were all on the left-hand side (going in), for these were the only ones to have windows, deep-set round windows looking over his garden, and meadows beyond, sloping down to the river."

Since hobbits are shorter than an ordinary person (they are called halflings) the ceilings in their houses are not very high, which is comfortable for hobbits and dwarves. Do you remember the famous scene in the movie which was based on the book, where Gandalf the Grey touches the chandelier with his head?

Actually, this action was not in the script. Ian McKellen, who played the role of the wizard, accidentally touched the lamp. The director liked the result that indicates the height of the ceilings in the room, and he left this episode in the movie.

In 1998, in New Zealand, where most of the filming took place, the scenery of a hobbit settlement was created near the town of Matamata. However, only the Baggins house was built completely. Its interior is great. The house is full of wooden furniture, books, candlesticks and clay jugs and cute trinkets.

These days any Hobbit fans who want to live like their favorite characters build Hobbit-style houses, sometimes they construct them underground. Many companies, began to build hobbit houses for sale. The size of the dwelling varies from several tens to a couple of hundred square meters, and the cost is from €13 thousand to €72 thousand. Some entrepreneurs create hotels for fans in the style of the Bagging’s house.

IN THE FLOPHOUSE (FROM «THE LOWER DEPTHS» BY M. GORKY)

Бутальянов Егор Станиславович ЖСК311-1

Butalyanov Egor Stanislavovich

The Lower Depths is a play written by Maxim Gorky in 1902. As soon as Konstantin Stanislavsky in the Moscow Art Theater staged the play, it immediately gained popularity because of sensitive social issues it touches. One of the topics that the author raises is the poverty. He shows the lowest stratum of society, fallen people: a prostitute, a drunkard and even a murderer. Their sinfulness leads them to the flophouse. According to Gorky, it is the worst place to live in because you will never leave it. Getting into a flophouse means getting to the actual lower depth.

The description of an interior appears only in the stage directions. It is often brief and not detailed because the play is a work intended for production on stage and each director chooses the scenery that corresponds specifically to his vision. Despite this, Gorky in detail describes flophouse inside and outside in order to convey the atmosphere of the place as accurately as possible.

This is how Gorky describes the interior in flophouse in aсt 1 (перевод автора).

The basement looks like a grot. The ceiling is heavy, stone vaults are smoked, plaster crumbled. The light is from the viewer and, from top to bottom, from the square window on the right side. The right corner occupied by fenced off thin bulkheads of Pepel’s room, near the door to this room there is Bubnov’s bunk. There is a large Russian stove in the left corner; there is a door to the kitchen in the left wall of stone where Kvashnya, Baron, Nastya live. Between the stove and the door against the wall is a wide bed covered with a dirty chintz bed-curtain. There are bunks everywhere along the walls. In the foreground, against the left wall, is a piece of wood with a vice and a small anvil attached to it, and another one, lower than the first. Clesh’ sits near in front of the last one anvil, trying on the keys to the old locks. At his feet are two large bunches of different keys put on the wire rings, a damaged tin samovar, a hammer, and filings. There are a large table, two benches and a stool in the middle of the flophouse. Everything is unpainted and dirty. At the table, by the samovar, Kvashnya is in charge, the Baron is chewing black bread, and Nastya is on a stool, reading a tattered book, leaning on the table. Anna, covered by the bed-curtain, coughs. Bubnov, sitting on his bunk, tries on old, torn trousers on a hat blank, clamped in his knees, figuring out how to cut them. Near him is a tattered cardboard from under a hat - for visors, pieces of oilcloth, rags. Satin has just woken up, lies on the bunk and growls. On the stove, invisible, the Actor is fiddling and coughing.

Gorky compares the flophouse with a grot to show how dark and cold it is. Such place not intended for comfortable living at all. The characters are like wild animals because they have no other choice but living in a cave-like house. The ceiling is heavy there, which means it puts moral pressure on the residents, some of them even go crazy. The flophouse is rarely cleaned, so stone vaults are smoked and beds are covered with a dirty chintz bed-curtains. Besides, it is very cramped inside. The bunks of numerous residents occupy almost all the free space. There is no private to retire and relax. For instance, Clesh’ works on a small anvil attached to piece of wood while ill Anna is trying to sleep. The residents live like ants in an anthill. Talking about furniture, there are only bunks, stools, benches, tables and stove. Everything is unpainted and dirty.

This is how Gorky describes the interior in flophouse in aсt 3 (перевод автора).

Wasteland is a yard space littered with various rubbish and overgrown with weeds. At the back of it is a tall brick firewall. It covers the sky. Near it are elderberry bushes. To the right is a dark, log wall of some kind of outbuilding: a barn or stable. To the left is the gray wall, covered with the remains of plaster, of the house in which the Kostylevs’ flophouse is located. It stands obliquely, so that its back corner goes almost into the middle of the wasteland. There is a narrow passage between it and the red wall. There are two windows in the gray wall: one is level with the ground, the other is 1.5 meters higher and closer to the firewall. Near this wall lie a sledge with its runners up and a stump of a log, 3 meters long. To the right, near the wall, there is a pile of old boards and beams. Natasha and Nastya are sitting next to each other on a log. On the firewood are Luka and Baron. The tick lies on a pile of wood near the right wall.

The interior of the flophouse is depressing, but the outside is no less depressing. The area around the flophouse is called a wasteland, which means there is no work, entertainment and prospects. The yard is littered with all sorts of garbage, which probably gives off a terrible stench. The high brick firewall blocks the sky. It blocks the view, which means even outside the residents feel as if they are in a cage. Nearby some elderberry bushes grow which is considered to be a dangerous plant, because, according to the legend, it was planted by the devil and now he constantly lives under it. The shelter itself also goes underground. This means that the characters live near the devil. They live in a kind of hell. The walls of the flophouse are mostly gray and covered with the remains of plaster. They reflect the joyless existence in such place. Due to the lack of normal furniture, the heroes have to sit on logs.

In conclusion, I can say that Gorky did a tremendous amount of work on the details to convey the atmosphere of poverty and hopelessness. Thanks to the vivid description, flophouse creates a feeling of discomfort and hostility. Such a detailed and realistic description deeply immerses the reader and viewer in the atmosphere of the play.

THE OVERLOOK HOTEL (FROM 'THE SHINING')

Мирзоян Артем Рубенович, РИК312-2

англ

The Overlook Hotel is a central element in Stanley Kubrick's psychological horror film "The Shining," based on Stephen King's novel. Well-known for its chilling atmosphere and beautiful setting, the Overlook Hotel serves as both a physical location and a metaphorical representation of the descent into madness.

1. Historical Background

Located in the remote mountains of Colorado, the Overlook Hotel was portrayed as an isolated, grandiose structure, with a rich history dating back to its construction in 1907. The Overlook had a reputation for hosting the wealthy and famous during its heyday.

2. Architecture and Design:

Kubrick's attention to detail is evident in the architectural design of the Overlook Hotel. The interior of the hotel was shot using various locations, resulting in a labyrinthine layout that disorients both the characters and the audience. The grand interiors, complete with luxurious ballrooms, halls, and a majestic lobby, contrast starkly with the sinister events that transpire within its walls.

3. Supernatural Presence:

One of the most prominent aspects of the Overlook Hotel is its supernatural presence. The building itself appears to be imbued with a sinister energy that influences the character's actions and pushes them to madness. The ghosts of past residents of the hotel, such as the Grady twins and the phantom bartender, add an eerie dimension to the story.

4. Impact on Characters:

The Overlook Hotel serves as a catalyst for the psychological deterioration of the main character, Jack Torrance, who becomes its caretaker during the winter season. As the isolation and paranormal occurrences intensify, the hotel's influence over Jack exacerbates his already fragile mental state. The hotel's dark history reawakens Torrance's suppressed anger and alcoholism, which leads to his violent transformation.

5. Symbolism and Themes:

The Overlook Hotel becomes a symbolic representation of the destructive forces that lurk within the human psyche. It expresses isolation, corruption, and the past echoing into the present. The hotel's vast spaces and long hallways can be seen as metaphors for the labyrinth of the mind, luring its victims into a trap of distorted reality.

Conclusion:

The Overlook Hotel in "The Shining" is a chilling setting that plays a crucial role in the film's narrative. With its haunting architecture, supernatural presence, and psychological significance, the hotel becomes a character itself, captivating audiences and leaving a lasting impression. The Overlook Hotel stands as a testament to the power of atmospheric storytelling, solidifying its place in cinematic history.

THE GHOST’S HOUSE (FROM 'A GHOST STORY')

Палчей Кристина Витальевна, РИК 313-2

Palchey Kristina Vitalievna

In «A Ghost Story» the house is an active participant of the story.

As a child a woman moved residences frequently and hid little notes wherever she lived. Shortly afterwards, husband is killed in a car accident, awakens as a ghost and walks home.

Further events happen in the house where the ghost watches his wife`s life, then she moves away, but first writes a note and hides it in a gap between some molding, which she paints over. A ghost wants to know her words but is unable to reach the note. Later, a single mother moves into the house with her young son and daughter. The ghost watches them eat, play the piano and celebrate Christmas. The children begin to sense his presence and become frightened. One night, he knocks a framed photo of the family off the piano and smashes dishes in the kitchen. The family moves out and the ghost continues scraping at the paint.

After some time, the ghost`s life in the house repeats itself, he witnesses their last argument, sits down at the piano, watches his wife leave the house for the last time. He finally gets the note, reads it and disappears.

Thus, the house is one of the main characters in this film: a piano that his wife wanted to get rid of, the walls where his wife hid a note, the sofa where the ghost sometimes greeted his wife from work. The ghost lived in the house, observing the fate of the house. All this time the ghost was trying to get a note in the wall from his wife, it did not matter what was written there, so it was important to him to see her last words.

BAKER STREET 221B (FROM «SHERLOCK»)

Туманова София, Кушакова Анастасия, ППК311-3

Tumanova Sofia, Kushakova Anastasia

Sherlock is a British mystery crime drama television series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Thirteen episodes have been produced, from 2010 to 2017.

Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes's flat in Sherlock series is impressive. It retained Victorian style and design as in the original. There are armchairs and a fireplace there, rare books and maps. However, there are modern gadgets and appliances there.

The main detail in the living room are the wall patterned with fleur-de-lis and a yellow smiling face painted on it. Focusing attention on one wall is a well-known technique that is used to avoid overloading the room with colours and patterns, as well as to reduce the cost.

There are plenty of accessories with British symbols: Union Jack pillow, a map of the British Isles, a tea set on the table. A black buffalo skull is used as a stand for headphones.

Another notable feature of Holmes's apartment is the clutter and untidiness of the furniture. The sofas and armchairs are covered with dust and the books on the shelves look untidy. This may indicate that Holmes does not pay much attention to his physical surroundings, focusing solely on his thoughts and problem solving. He may be in his own world, far from external reality.

You also need to pay attention to the weapons that are everywhere in Holmes' apartment. This may indicate his desire to protect and secure himself, as well as his unusual alertness and caution. However, this may indicate a sense of vulnerability and a need for protection.

Holmes's apartment is also notable for its lack of traditional comfort elements, such as decorations, pictures, or other objects that usually create an atmosphere of coziness and personality. This may indicate his independence and detachment from his emotions. Holmes is more interested in rationality and logic than emotion and comfort.

In the bedroom a viewer can see bed linen made from natural materials, hand-embroidered pillows and unique paintings on the walls.

Marble frescoes and hand-painted decorations create an atmosphere of luxury Victorian era in Sherlock Holmes's bathroom.

Props in Sherlock`s office are well thought-out, elaborate and functional. There are test tubes, maps and books on the shelves, a clock on the wall. Newspapers show Holmes' obsession with information and knowledge when it comes to investigations.

Overall, Holmes' apartment appears as a reflection of his unique inner world.

WIZARDS` HOUSES FROM `HARRY POTTER` SERIES

Курченкова Дарья Отчество, Менщикова Арина Андреевна, РРК311-4

The novels about Harry Potter created by JK Rowling obviously has gained popularity due to its amazing world of magic and wizardry. Plenty of things are different in the World of Magic. For example, houses where wizards live.

Hogwarts forester Rubeus Hagrid's Hut is a small house located in the east of Hogwarts grounds, between the castle and the Forbidden Forest, not far from the Main Gate.

The hut consists of two rooms: a living room and a storage room. It is a bit cramped but there is enough room for a half-giant. In a larger room, there is a table, chairs and Hagrid’s bed. Also, there is a fireplace, where Rubeus cooks simple food for himself and bakes cupcakes.

Next to Hagrid's dwelling there is a small kitchen garden where he grows a great variety of vegetables, for example, pumpkins for Halloween.

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger often visited Hagrid's Hut.

The Weasleys live in the house called the Burrow. It is comfortable dwelling despite the furniture is very different here. Hardly anyone can find two pieces of furniture in the same style. In the living room there is a large fireplace, a comfortable sofa and armchairs.

There is a large wooden table and eight chairs in the kitchen. On the wall there is a Weasley kitchen clock, which show where members of the family are.

There are six bedrooms in the Burrow: Arthur and Molly`s bedroom, Percy`s, the twins`, Ginny`s and Ron`s (a small room on the top floor, right under the attic).

Young magicians in Hogwarts have a common bedroom and a common living room where they spend their free time.

The entrance to the Gryffindor common room is located behind a large portrait of the Fat Lady in a pink silk dress. If you know the correct password, the portrait opens a door.

The main colours of Gryffindor are red and gold, and the living room is furnished in these colours. There are many soft chairs, a large fireplace and tables for studying.

The boys' and girls' bedrooms are upstairs. Each bedroom is a round room with four-poster beds.

SMART HOME: PROS AND CONS

Рогожина Юлия, ИПС311-2

Nowadays, smart homes typically comprise a range of devices, gadgets, high-tech heating and lighting systems that can be controlled remotely via a phone or a computer.

Smart lighting contains software that transmits signals wirelessly and could be switched on and off. A user can control lights from any place and program them, for example, to brighten or dim at certain times of the day or to activate motion sensors with voice commands.

Without a smart switch, such as an in-wall dimmer, smart bulbs operate with a traditional light switch that must be turned on for the bulbs to work. This gives smart switches a greater home energy-savings opportunity than smart bulbs alone.

Popular smart lighting options include Philips Hue's variegating Color Ambiance bulbs and light strip, Belkin's Wemo Smart Light Switch, Wi-Fi-connected LED bulbs from Govee and Wyze, among others, and Nano leaf’s illuminating hexagonal tiles.

Smart thermostats allow users to monitor and manage their heating and cooling from their smart home assistants or phones. Using apps, users can adjust the temperature of their homes and turn their HVAC systems on and off remotely. These systems are sometimes compatible with other devices, such as smart smoke alarms, to optimize safety, and can be programmed to maximize efficiency.

For example, you can set smart thermostats to turn down or turn off around the time you go to bed, or to turn on an hour before you get home from work. This saves energy and money, especially if you're able to evade peak hours when electricity is most expensive.

The Google Nest thermostat, for example, has a Rush Hour Rewards program that offers users monetary incentives to decrease their energy consumption during these peak times - easy to do with smart climate control systems. Smart thermostats besides Nest include models by Ecobee, Amazon, and Honeywell.

Almost all home appliances (washers and dryers, dishwashers, vacuums, ovens, and air conditioners, cookers and microwaves) can be made smart. For example, you can monitor and manage the power with smart plugs made by Wemo, Ring, and Wyze which allow users to turn off any device via a phone app or voice command (via a home assistant). These plugs can be fitted into sockets.

Smart security systems à la Ring include CCTV, door sensors, and alarm systems that help notify home owners of invasions, fires, floods, and other disasters.

There are some advantages of a smart home.

Provides assurance. Homeowners can monitor their homes remotely, countering dangers such as a forgotten coffee maker left on or a front door left unlocked.

Accommodates user preferences for convenience. For example, users can program their garage door to open, the lights to go on, the fireplace to turn on and their favorite music to play once they arrive home. Also, homeowners can use voice commands to turn on music, search the web and control their household smart devices.

Improves efficiency. Instead of leaving the air conditioning on all day, a smart home system can learn homeowner behaviors to ensure the house is cooled down by the time they return home. Smart systems allow to use energy, water and other resources more efficiently, which helps save both natural resources and money.

The main criticism of smart home automation is that the devices meant to reduce energy consumption are constantly draining power while on standby. They're often referred to as «vampire» devices, electrical devices that continue to use electricity when they aren't in use.

In addition, a reliable Internet connection is needed.

Moreover, to be truly effective, devices must be interoperable regardless of manufacturer and use the same protocol or, at least, complementary ones.

Also, Internet devices introduce security challenges because most of them lack built-in encryption. They can serve as access points for the broader network's sensitive data. Many smart homeowners also worry about data privacy. Consumers expressed strong concern regarding the security of their personal data collected and transmitted by smart home devices. They are equally concerned about the potential unauthorized access or control of smart devices without their permission.

Finally, smart home devices are still expensive.

`BLENDER` AS A TOOL TO DESIGN A DWELLING

Супрядкина Юлиана Денисовна, Орешкин Сергей Валерьевич, ИПС311-2

Supryadkina Juliana Denisovna, Oreshkin Sergay Valerievich

Blender is a type of software which helps designers to create 3D models of stunning interior and exterior of buildings and bring their ideas to life.

Key sections in Blender:

  • Modeling, where you create your 3D objects.

  • Editing, where you can modify your object.

  • Shaders, which allows you to choose the texture, color and so on.

  • Rendering, where you can preview the result before importing your object, scene, or animation.

  • Animation, where you can animate your object to watch it and correct details.

Blender has many different add-ons to add features and use different materials.

The best add-ons for beginners called Blender Kit has a search bar and sections with textures and ready-made models.

To start use Blender, you need to come up with and sketch a rough design. It's also helpful to gather references to visualize what you want to achieve before transferring it into 3D. By default, you should begin with the basics, such as walls and floors. You can create a floor using the plane shape and then make it volumetric through editing. For creating walls, you can duplicate the floor and position it accordingly.

The next step is to create furniture. You can use ready-made models from the Blender Kit add-on or create them yourself. There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube for such tasks.

After creating everything you need, you should apply textures, colors, or images, depending on the object you're working with. If you want to create a painting or television, you should add an image as a texture. For objects like tables, sofas, or floors, you need to add textures and colors. You can also combine these techniques, for example, applying a texture to a carpet and then adding a photo as the color.

Next, you need to set up the camera. It's easy to do, but I recommend watching a few YouTube videos on this topic to achieve impressive results. The framing and angle play an important role in presenting your project. Optionally, you can add animation to your project, rotating the house from different angles, for example, or capturing the house from various perspectives. Then you should set up lighting.

The final step is to import your project. Everything is ready, enjoy your work.

VIDEOGAMES AS A 3D DESIGN TOOL

Тишкин Валерий Антонович, ИПС311-2

Tishkin Valery Antonocivh

Videogames nowadays became very popular and, as a result, very profitable products, so involving more money for development makes it possible to use complicated professional physics and visual engines.

Speaking about 3D modeling and design, the best examples are Minecraft, Garry’s Mod, Sims 3,4 and House Flipper.

Minecraft and Garry’s Mod are sandboxes games, letting you do whatever you want, experiment with game physics and create everything what’s on your mind using game objects from library.

Minecraft is a 3D sandbox game that has no required goals to accomplish, allowing players a large amount of freedom in choosing how to play the game.

Game world is composed of rough 3D objects - mainly cubes and fluids, and commonly called blocks - representing various materials, such as dirt, stone, ores, tree trunks, water, and lava. Core gameplay revolves around picking up and placing these objects. These blocks are arranged in a 3D grid, while players can move freely around the world. Players can mine blocks and then place them elsewhere, enabling them to build things.

Garry’s Mod is engine tool itself, which is focusing on creating entire game with it’s own universe and world, while Minecraft is just you and different type of cubes, it lets you realize any idea you want brick by brick.

Garry's Mod is a physics-based sandbox game that, in its base game mode, has no set objectives. Player is able to spawn non-player characters, ragdolls, and props, and interact with them by various means. Using physics gun, ragdolls and props can be picked up, rotated, and frozen in place.

Individual limbs of ragdolls can also be manipulated. Tool gun is a multi-purpose item for tasks such as welding and constraining props together, and altering facial expressions of ragdolls.

Easy way to operate and simple input settings makes it possible for everybody to implement kind of blueprint for real building.

In Sims series a player creates virtual people called Sims, places them in houses, and helps direct their moods and satisfy their desires. Players can either place their Sims in pre-constructed homes or build them themselves.

Gameplay of House Flipper involves fixing up properties in order to create a profit. Tasks that can be performed include painting, laying down tiles, cleaning, installations, and demolition. Players can fix and personalize their own homes, fix houses in quests and buy houses to fix and sell.

Sims and House Flipper games are focusing on living places themselves, so there’s much more tools for easier planning, much more furniture and design props. It makes possible to make exact copy or project to implement in real life.

In conclusion, I want to say that videogames became very huge segment of modern reality, which leads to developing them sometimes even better than narrow-directed working tools. Games will not be as exact as these programs, but much easier to use.

HOME AS A SPACE FOR LIVING

HOME: A PLACE OF POWER OR IDEAL PICTURE?

Склипис Юлия Сергеевна, ЖСК311-6

Sklipis Julia Sergeevna

Introduction.

Home is a place, where we spend most of our time. This is our so-called fortress, where we rest, resfresh and feel safe. In a world full of changes and anxieties, it is our loved ones and the space in which we live that help restore the spiritual resource. The house is also a reflection of our preferences, lifestyle and values. In this report, we will look at whether the house can become a place of power for us, how to equip it and whether it is just an ideal picture at the moment.

Home as an energy source.

To begin with, house can be a source of both positive and negative energy. It is important to understand that each of us has his/hers own energy, which can affect the energy of the home. If we feel tired and irritated when we are at it, then it may be worth reconsidering our attitude to this place and changing its energy with the help of, for example, decor, that is small details, which we will talk about later, or new furniture or maybe a complete change of place, localization.

Learn to feel the space.

You can assume that I keep talking some nonsense about prostration, spirituality, but remember what you feel when you come home or visit someone or come to visit your grandmother outside or even on vacation being in a completely new place and when you are with someone nearby, at a distance. Remember? Share your feelings.

Now you can clearly understand that this is an important component not only of us, people in general, but also of our space, in this case at home.

So think about what your home lacks for some balance, what objects can enhance nice energy, fill you with the state that you would like to feel. Perhaps some kind of painting or tableware that you have been dreaming about for a long time, but have been putting off buying all the time or new beautiful home clothes, candles with your favorite fragrance. Certain colors or textures that are pleasing to you. Another tip is to get things that give you pleasant memories, but do not rush to bring them out, first feel. If the plates you brought from vacation do not inspire you now, take them away, this is normal. If there are no sad or negative emotions, put these things into use, they will give you resources and strength. Do not rush to make a choice, immerse yourself in the details — this can become a practice not only for filling the house, but also for learning yourself.

House improvement.

To make the house to become a place of power, it is necessary to pay attention to its arrangement. The choice of color of walls, furniture, decor and other interior elements can really affect the overall energy of the room. For example, warm and bright tones can create a feeling of coziness and comfort, while dark and cold shades can cause a feeling of oppression and fatigue. It is considered that pastel colors are soothing. They, like a white sheet of paper, serve as an ideal background for your thoughts and emotions. On the one hand, this is a plus of the pastel interior - it is inactive, does not impose its own meanings and associations. But on the other hand, there are no light in it and a person in stress and anxiety remains alone with his feelings.

And now give your attention to this house, what do you feel?

We are all different people, but I think many people can agree that it is literally empty. There is nothing that would remind of in general about someone living. This is the house of Kim Kardashian and now it is only so-called minimalism. The so-called, because the house should be filled with comfort and calmness even in the named style and not emptiness, which can also be reflected on your soul, mental state since we can spend most of our free time or rest at home and in this case the affect is more often negative. By the way, back to this house, I want to add that Kim made it not entirely on her own, but because of the robbers who broke into her house before. She had to hide everything that showed her wealth or reminded of the people living in it.

In general, it is important to fill your space with yourself and other living people, your family. Now, even in this perfectionism and that perfect picture are flourishing and not in a good way. Go to the TikTok and watch videos of these ideal families, you will see that even their children dress up and play in pastel beige, brown or gray tones, but is this normal? Of course not, because it is very important for children to learn the world from different sides at an early age, especially in colors and a picture of the world.

That is why it is important to understand and distinguish the difference of the same real minimalism from perfectionism, oppression of oneself, loved ones and even one's space in the frames.

Things and other small things that matter.

For sure, you can already know that little things and details take an important role in our lives, because even one little thing can affect us very positively or negatively.

For example, lighting candles crackling like a fireplace, you can feel calmness and coziness and surrounding yourself with small trinkets, which are now gaining popularity, you feel uniqueness and your atmosphere, energy.

You can quickly and inexpensively refresh the house, let in more sun and colors by changing textiles. New curtains, bed linen or a completely budget option: pillowcases for sofa pillows in the living room that will instantly change the mood in the house.

And here's a practical tip: surround yourself with things that give you pleasure. The more often you use a thing, the more joyful and nice it should be for you. Buy a cheerful mug and drink tea or any other drink from it. At least two or three times a day, she will remind you that our problems are not eternal.

People in your home.

The main secret of how to make a house a symbol of peace and confidence in the future is the beloved people who are waiting for you. It is worth spending more time at home, communicating, pronouncing emotions with your family.

Conclusion.

Home is one of the most important places in our life. It can be a place of power or an ideal picture, as I sad, which is most often an unhealthy manifestation of perfectionism due to the negative influence on us. It is important to remember that the house should reflect our values and lifestyle and then it will become a place where we can relax, recover and recharge and just a favorite place to come and just be.

HOME: SIMPLE INTERIOR SOLUTIONS

Stativko Arina Dmitrievna

Psychologists have proven that the atmosphere in our house directly affects our lives. The house affects how we feel and express ourselves.

However, not all people know how to create a cozy and comfortable environment at home. The main purpose of my report is to show simple interior solutions that will help to create a comfortable atmosphere in your house.

  1. Proper Lighting.

The first is the lighting. Properly exposed light can instantly change the atmosphere in the house. Designers recommend to use soft, warm lighting, because it immediately creates cosiness. The best way to use lightning in the interior is to have various light sources strategically placed throughout the house. Table lamps provide a gentle glow in the living room, while dimmer switches help to control the brightness. Candles add a touch of warmth and serenity, especially during quiet nights or when I want to create a relaxing ambiance.

  1. Textiles and Soft Surfaces.

The next importamt thing is adding textiles like plaids, soft pillows, blankets, and rugs. They play a significant role in making your home cozy. They not only add a layer of warmth but also provide a sense of comfort.

  1. Plants and Natural Elements.

Next, try to add some houseplants. Besides their aesthetic value, they purify the air and promote a sense of tranquility. Additionally, natural elements like wooden furniture, stone decorations, or seashells give a feeling of being connected to the natural world.

  1. Well-Organized Space.

An efficiently organized space is fundamental in creating a harmonious and comfortable home environment. When items are arranged, contributes to a sense of tranquility. A well-organized area allows smooth movement and accessibility, reducing unnecessary clutter and stress. It fosters a welcoming atmosphere that encourages relaxation and productivity, making the living environment more conducive to both work and leisure activities.

  1. Aromas.

Scents play a crucial role in the ambiance of a home. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, the comforting scent of baking bread or cookies, or the gentle fragrance from scented candles or essential oil diffusers all contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere. These scents evoke positive emotions and make the space feel more like a home.

Taking everything into account, we can see that there are a lot of easy interior choices that make your house comfortable and cozy. remembering the importance of a pleasant atmosphere in the house, I recommend everyone to think about creating a comfortable environment in their space.

FENG SHUI INTERIOR DESIGN

Давыденко Ессения Евгеньевна, ЖСК311-2

Davydenko Eseniia Evgenievna

Feng Shui, which means wind and water, is an ancient art that was appeared over 3,000 years ago in China. In Chinese culture, wind and water associated with good health and good fortune. Ancient people believed that arranging a home according to the rules of Feng Shui would help improve careers, finances, and family relationships.

Feng Shui is consider to be the interaction between a human and environment. The goal of Feng Shui is to achieve a positive influence of energy, which is called Chi, on people. Feng Shui reveals how to make positive energy flow to improve health and lure good fortune. To be more precise, Feng Shui is a complex of laws of designing buildings, placing furniture and belongings and even bodies.

The main tool which is used is the bagua, or the energy map. It consists of colored zones, which are responsible for various spheres of people`s lives: for example, wealth is blue, fame and love are red, etc.

It's easy to use. Firstly, draw a plan of your apartment. Then find the North, which is responsible for income. Next, identify the other areas of the room using the color map.

Wealth zone is located in the southeast; this is the best place to organize a study. It should be light green and purple. There should be a Chinese god Hottey, a money toad or a money tree. Also, there should be things that symbolize water: an aquarium with fish, a vase with flowers, a small fountain.

Love zone. This is the southwest of the apartment - the place is most suitable for a bedroom. According to Feng Shui, the interior of a bedroom should be designed in red and yellow. Butterflies should be located above the bed as they can bring a soul mate or provide new emotions.

Health zone is an area in the center of the room. Natural colors (green, brown, sand) are the best, as well as bowls of fruit and vases of flowers.

Feng Shui also involves the balance of the five elements: wind, water, fire, wood and metal. Each one symbolizes certain qualities such as stability, wisdom, growth and creativity. So, your home must balance all five elements in its decor.

Wood symbolizes creativity, growth and vitality. Wood’s colors are green and blue. Fire governs passion, transformation, energy and enthusiasm. Incorporate candles and different types of lighting, as well as decor pieces in red, pink and purple. Metal is the element of logic, efficiency and precision. Metal items in spherical and round shapes will enhance the material’s productive presence in your home. Water symbolizes spirituality and wisdom. Add mirrors, aquariums or fountains in irregular shapes to foster relaxation. The Earth element controls stability, physical strength and balance. To bring this rejuvenating element inside, decorate rooms in earthy tones and incorporate images of landscapes.

On average a person spends a third of their life in the bedroom, which should be protected from negative energy. Candles in beautiful candlesticks, saucers with natural stones and decorative items made of natural wood can be replaced there.

In the kitchen it is recommended to place the stove and sink away from each other, because they symbolize two opposing elements - fire and water. It is not allowed to combine the living room and the kitchen.

Those who do not believe in the power of energy can get new ideas in Feng Shui design.
