Synthetic Sea: Plastic in the Ocean
Task 1. Have a look at the pictures and say what are we going to watch a video about?
Task 2. Study the vocabulary and translate the sentences into English, using the words given below:
a surface | поверхность |
a zooplankton | зоопланктон |
a plankton | планктон |
petroleum | нефть |
a threat | угроза |
an expert on the breakdown of smth.
to glide | скользить |
to become ingested | быть проглоченным |
to be deposited on | оседать на |
to alarm | бить тревогу |
to get a handle on | пытаться контролировать |
to ingest | глотать |
Task 3. Watch the episode and answer the questions:
Who is Captain Charles Moore?
Where did he travel?
By what had he been alarmed?
The ocean is filling up with trash, isn’t it?
What did they do to get a handle on the quantity of trash in the ocean?
How many kilometers did they trawl in general?
Where do they have the Science Education Adventure Laboratory (SEA)?
What do most people find highly distressing to learn about?
Task 4. Watch the episode and fill in the gaps:
Here in the open__________, graceful __________ glide beneath the __________ in pursuit of __________, their primary __________. These fish in turn feed on minute, prolific __________ called zooplankton. These days, __________ share the surface __________ with increasing numbers of minute ___________ particles, posing a problem, since __________ and __________ are now consuming plastic in addition to plankton. Since __________based plastics are nonbiodegradable, any __________ entering the ocean remains there, continually __________ into ever-smaller __________ until it becomes ingested or is deposited on some __________ shore.
Task 5. Match the parts of the sentences. Now watch the episode and check:
1.The Laysan albatross and the black footed albatross
2.The Laysan albatross | as biodegradation of petroleum-based manufactured plastic. |
3.If the chick is not receiving enough nutrients, enough food, and the plastic | are so heavy and so rigid that there’s no organism, no bioengineered bacteria, nothing that can break them down. |
4.What you see in here | still exists. |
5.Every piece of plastic ever manufactured | is a bottle cap. |
6.The molecular weight of a molecule, a single molecule of plastic, these long chain polymers | is basically filling the void in the stomach, essentially it could die. |
7.That’s why there’s no such thing | ingests lighters and light sticks and large plastic fragments. |
| ingest post-consumer plastics. |
Task 6. Watch the episode and try to describe the process of biodegradation. Remember to follow the next points:
Task 7. Watch the episode and fill in the information about lantern fish:
671 | |
9 | |
35% | |
seals, dolphins, tuna, mahi - mahi
Task 8. Watch the episode from 09:13 to 09:41 and say to what kind of conclusion do they all come?
Task 9. Make up a discussion. One is a reporter, the other one is a scientist. The main idea is to tell people about the situation (water pollution), close to the video.
Task 10. Write an essay on the following topics [chose one]:
