Charles Dickens - English writer, stenographer, reporter, novelist and essayist. A classic of world literature, one of the greatest prose writers of the XIX century, he became the most popular English-language writer during his lifetime. Dickens' work is attributed to the heights of realism, but his novels reflected both sentimental and fairy-tale beginnings.

Early years. Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in the small English town of Landport. He was the second child of eight children of John Dickens and his wife Elizabeth Dickens. The writer spent his childhood in terrible poverty. In 1824, his father, unable to provide for a large family, ended up in debt prison. To help his mother make ends meet, 12-year-old Charlie was forced to drop out of school and get a job in a factory. On Sundays , the whole family went to prison to their father.

  • Two years later, Dickens consolidated the fame of a talented writer thanks to two books — "Oliver Twist" and "Nicholas Nickleby".
  • In total, Dickens wrote 13 novels, several dozen novels and short stories.
