- In 1620 the first people from England arrived in America. They left England because of religious problems.
- In 1776 after the war with Britain, America became an independent country. Americans wrote the Declaration of the Independence and designed a new flag – The Stars and Stripes .

- After the war in 1861-1865 between the northern and the southern states (south lost) the government stopped slavery .

Visiting New York
There are a lot of things to see and to do in New York. It is easy for the visitor to get to any place in the city. Manhattan, a very important business part of the city is an island. In Manhattan avenues go north and south, and most streets go east and west. They have numbers or names. Both avenues and streets are usually straight.
Fifth Avenue is popular with New Yorkers and tourists. It is famous for its shops where you can buy everything you want. The Metropolitan Museum is situated on Fifth Avenue as well. The Museum has a wonderful collection of paintings and is the biggest museum in New York.
Chinatown and Little Italy are also very interesting places to visit in Manhattan. They are famous for their restaurants with tasty foods. You can eat in New York every day during fifty years and never visit the same café or restaurant two times! Here you can find food from nearly every country of the world.
Central Park is situated in Manhattan too. It is a very pleasant, a green island in the middle of a busy city. There are some lakes and ponds, two skating rinks and a Zoo there.
New York is a city of skyscrapers. Some of them are not very beautiful, bit some are wonderful and very modern. From some skyscrapers you can look at the city and enjoy its beauty.
Everybody knows the Statue of Liberty, the famous symbol of the USA. It stands on Liberty Island not far from New York. The statue was a present from French people to Americans. A lot of people come in boats to look at the tall statue and at New York City which you can see so well from it.

When ______________ _____ ______ towers were completed in 1973 many felt them to be sterile monstrosities, even though they were the world's tallest buildings at that time. But most New Yorkers became fond of "The Twin Towers" and in September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks there came great sadness for the loss of the buildings. The complex, located in the heart of New York City's downtown financial district, contained 1.24 million m² of office space, almost four percent of Manhattan's entire office inventory.

The building has 85 stories of commercial and office space and an indoor and outdoor observation deck on the 86th floor. The remaining 16 stories represent the spire, which is capped by a 102nd floor observatory, and atop the spire is an antenna topped off with a lightning rod. The Empire State Building is the first building to have more than 100 floors. It has 6,500 windows, 73 elevators and there are 1,860 steps from street level to the 102nd floor. It has a total floor area of approximately 254,000 m².

The Met's permanent collection contains more than two million works of art, divided into nineteen curatorial departments. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the Met organizes and hosts large traveling shows throughout the year.
__________________________is the largest decorated Neo-Gothic-style Catholic cathedral in North America. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, and a parish church, located just across the street from Rockefeller Center. The eight deceased archbishops of New York, six of them Cardinals, are buried in a crypt under the former high altar, visible from the entrance to the Lady Chapel in the rear of the cathedral.
This building was completed in 1973 , it was the world's tallest buildings at that time. But most New Yorkers became fond of "The Twin Towers" . In September 11, 2001 after terrorist attacks it came the great sadness for millions people in America.
