Meeting Christmas»

1. How I love the winter things,

When the robin redbreast sings.

Get my knitting needles ready-

Make a little scarf for Teddy.

Jack Frost at my window-pane,

Icicles along the lane.

Lots of chestnuts we can roast,

Lots of supper buttered toast!

Furry gloves and woolly bonnet

With a scarlet bobble on it.

Look, the pond is thick with ice!

Get my skates on in a trice.

Circus clowns and pantomime,

Pretty dresses, party time

Coloured candles, glowing bright,

Carol singers in the night.

Winter things are fun, you see

Holly berries, Christmas tree.

Snowflakes on my nose and chin.

Hello, Winter! Come on in!

2. Christmas is the main public holiday in Germany, Britain and the US. The Christian holy day is held on December 25th in honour of the birth of Jesus Christ. People usually decorate their houses with evergreens: holly, mistletoe and ivy, and they put a Christmas tree decorated with tinsel, baubles, fairy lights and the star on the top in the rooms. On Christmas Eve some people go to a special church service called Midnight Mass or Christmas Eve Service at 12 at night.

Five little candles burning so bright.

The first one said, “We make great light”

The second one said, “The child was born”

The third one said, “Our light will adorn”

The fourth one said, “We shine for him”

The fifth one said, “Let′s not be dim!”

So they stood very tall and glowed very bright.

And the Christ child smiled that very night.

4. Children believe that Santa Clause, also called Santa, Father Christmas or Kriss Kringle, visits each house on Christmas Eve by climbing down the chimney. They leave out something for him to eat or drink. And they put a Christmas stocking at the end of their bed or by the fire for him to fill it with presents. Santa is supposed to fly about the sky in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer.

5. On Christmas Eve for girls and boys

You fill long stockings full of toys

With many sweets and sugar plums

But none have ever seen you come,

Dear Santa Claus.

Oh, through the wind and snow and sleet,

Up at the pane above the street

I'd watch for you, but old folks say,

When children wake, you stay away,

Dear Santa Claus.

So you must bow above my bed –

This Christmas Eve and touch my head

With kisses, soft – as shadows creep,

So I may see you in my dream,

Dear Santa Claus.

6. At night children usually go carol singing to collect money for homeless and poor people. Many of the carols have been written since the 19th century as Christmas hymns celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Some of them are very well-known.

Silent night, Holy night, Son of God,

Love′s pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face

With the dawn of redeeming grace

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

7. The most important meal on December 25th is Christmas dinner. It consists of a turkey with potatoes, carrots and sprouts, followed by Christmas pudding with a lot of dried fruit and covered with burning brandy or a Christmas cake with dried fruit and a covering of icing and mince pies. At the start people often pull a cracker with a small toy, a paper bat, and a joke.

Jingle, bells! Jingle bells!

Jingle all the way!

Oh what fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh.

Dashing through the snow

In a one-horse open sleigh,

O the fields we go

Laughing all the way.

Bells, on bob-tail ring,

Making spirits bright.

What fun it is to ride and sing

A sleighing song tonight.

9. Children like to stage short plays called pantomimes with fairies, princes and princesses. Here is one of them - «Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs»

1. Q: Mirror, mirror on the wall,

Among the ladies in this land

Who is the fairest of them all?

2. M: You are, of course, my Queen. But Snow White is lovelier than you.

3. Q: Hunter, take this child away, deep into the forest and kill her, for I can no longer bear the sight of her!

4. S: Please, do not kill me. If you will spare me, I'll go further into the forest and I promise never to try to return home again.

5. H: Run away then, my poor child.

6. S: Well it's a small cottage. What will happen, if I enter it?

Oh, everything is so small, neat and clean.

But I'm very hungry and thirsty. I'll eat from each plate and drink from each glass.

This bed is long. This bed is short. This one is too hard. This one is too soft. And this one is all right.

7/1 D: Who has been sitting on my chair? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/2 D: Who has been eating from my plate? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/ 3 D: Who has been eating my bread? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/4 D: Who has been eating my vegetables? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/5 D: Who has been using my knife? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/ 6 D: Who has been using my fork? Who has been lying in my bed?

7/|7 D: Who has been drinking out of glass? Look, who's in my bed?

8/1 D: What a beautiful child!

9. S: Oh! My name is Snow White.

10/2 D: But how did you find our cottage?

11. S: The huntsman took me to the forest to kill me but agreed to spare my life. I ran and ran and ran until I came to this cottage.

12/3 D: If you will look after us

12/4 D: Keep our house tidy,

12/5 D: Cook and wash and mend for us

12/6 D: you can live here

12/7 D: we'll take good care of you.

13. S: You are kind. I'll be glad to do that.

14/1 D: If your stepmother learns that you are here, she may try to do you harm. So don't let anyone enter the house.

15. S: I promise.

Narrator: Soon the Queen learnt that Snow White became more beautiful than she. She wanted to kill her and gave her a poisoned apple. But Snow White only fell asleep. The Prince saw her and fell in love with her. The apple flung out from her throat and she woke up. Snow White agreed to be Prince’s wife and they lived happily ever after.
