VI. Read the text.

Helen Keller, a famous American.

People in many countries knew Helen Keller. She was born in 1880 in Alabama, the USA. For the first 19 months she was a pretty and happy baby. Then after a sudden (внезапная) illness (болезнь), she became deaf and blind.

Soon she forgot the old world and lived in the silence (тишина) and darkness.

The life returned to Helen, when she met Anne Sullivan. Miss Sullivan was a teacher from the Institute for the Blind in Boston.

It was difficult for Anne Sullivan to work with Helen. She taught Helen to spell words. Helen learned to read, to write and even to speak! She also learned to swim and to ride horse back.

Helen and Miss Sullivan travelled together. In different countries they raised (собирали) money for the blind. The life of Helen Keller showed that people can overcome (преодолеть) their troubles. People respected (уважали) Helen for her work with the blind, the deaf and the speechless.
