Surfing is popular all over the world. It is  practiced  on lakes and rivers, seas and oceans   — anywhere with good wind.

Some people think that it is a new kind of sport. But it is not. It was first described by Captain James Cook in 1778. Surfing is one of the oldest sports on Earth. The origin of surfing is unknown. But prehistoric stone pictures in Peru that date back 5,000 years show people surfing.

The birthplace of surfing is Hawaii and today it’s home of the most famous surfing competition. But it is also popular in California, and Spain.

The best time for surfing is when the waves are high. Surfers usually prefer to go surfing between March and October when water is warm. But special wetsuits help surfers to surf all the year and practice in cold water. Also you need a surf board.

Serious surfers must be brave, love adventures and have lots of energy. They are so happy to be on the top of the waves, that they never want to stop.
