He was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known as the author of the classic high-fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings.

He died on September 2, 1973 in the city of Bournemouth.

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high-fantasy novel. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. Written in stages between 1937 and 1949, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling novels ever written, with over 150 million copies sold.

In 2001-2003, it was released on the film adaptation of the novel in three parts. Trilogy was highly appreciated by critics and has received numerous awards, including 17 awards "Oscar".

In addition to the adaptations, "The Lord of the Rings" was the basis for the creation of a variety of computer games.
