English in Use  Setting the goals Today you’re going to practice talking about some strange or unusual events that happened in your life. Remember, your previous home task was to write a short story narrating some facts of your (or somebody else’s) life. It will be of much use to you, because it might serve as a basis for the dialogue you are going to make today.

English in Use: Narrating past events  Class work: Phonetic warming-up  (ex. 4, p. 22) Work on your pronunciation Read the Reading Rules box in the right bottom corner of the page. You are going to practice the sounds for: e , ee , ea /i:/: m e , s ee , b ea d ere , eer , ear /i /: h ere , b eer , b ear d Listen to the audio track for this exercise and write the words that you see in the table into two columns according to the sounds that you hear. Example :  /i:/   /i /    me   mere Listen again and repeat after the speaker.

  • Listen to the audio track for this exercise and write the words that you see in the table into two columns according to the sounds that you hear.

Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation . Read the first two exchanges from a dialogue between two friends in exercise 2, page 22 and look at the picture in the left bottom corner of the page. What do you think happened to Penny? Make sure you use the past forms of the verbs to answer this question! Listen to the dialogue (audio track for ex. 1b, p. 22) and check your answer.
