Easter in England
Easter is a time when certain old traditions are observed. It is celebrated as a religious festival and as the start of spring. The day we celebrate Christ's rising from the dead is called Easter. It is held on the first Sunday following the first full moon on or after March 21. Orthodox Easter comes two weeks later.
To many people Easter means the coming of spring. In spring the buds in the trees shoot out new leaves. Birds build their nests and lay their eggs. For hundreds of years eggs have symbolized the awakening of life in spring.
In England it is a time for the giving and receiving of presents which traditionally take the form of an Easter egg, a new hat for the Easter Bonnet Parade and hot cross buns (sweet buns with a cross on top before baking). Children get chocolate Easter eggs. They are either hollow or have a filling, and are usually covered with brightly colored silver paper. They can be bought at any sweet shop in the week before Easter.
Traditionally the eggs are painted different colours with patterns. Many families color or draw faces on their Easter eggs to make them look gay. Nowadays Easter eggs are made of chocolate. Children look for a surprise in each egg. It is usually a small toy. The Easter egg is the most popular emblem of Easter.

On the evening of Pure Thursday the Passion service is performed, after, which people return home with lighted candles. The last Sunday before Easter is called Willow Sunday. On this day pussy-willow branches are blessed in the church.
Easter begins with the matins and high mass, during which the pasky (traditional Easter breads), pysanky and krashanky (decorated or coloured Easter eggs) are blessed in the church.
