  1. READING COMPREHENSION (15 minutes)

Read the text and answer the following questions choosing the correct variant

The Christmas Tree

No one knows for sure who decorated the first Christmas tree. The custom of bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas started in Germany. One legend says that Martin Luther started the practice. Luther was an important Christian leader. According to the story, he noticed the starlit sky as he walked home one Christmas Eve about the year 1513. He thought the stars looked as if they were shining on the branches. When he arrived home, Martin Luther placed a small fir tree inside his house. He decorated it with lighted candles.

Decorating Christmas trees became popular in Germany. Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the German husband of Queen Victoria, brought the tradition to England. Both German and English people then brought it to America. And now nearly every family in Great Britain and the USA has a Christmas tree.

The biggest Christmas tree in Britain is put up in Trafalgar Square in London. The people of Norway still give this tree every year to the British people to thank them for helping Norway against Hitler in the Second World War.

In four different laboratories across Great Britain, scientists are already working on fashion for

the future. Today we visit them and talk about their ideas.

  1. First we go to a small university building on the outskirts of Liverpool. Jocelyn Brown, the head of the

department, informs us about their project: clothes which smell. As Brown explains, people can save on antiperspirants and perfume because the clothes produce a nice, fresh aroma.

  1. The next place to visit is a charming village on the coast of Scotland. Our host here is Mandy Wilson who manages the project for the University of Glasgow. Their idea is clothes with a tiny electrical heating system to keep the wearer warm. When it is hot, you can switch the system off and clothes are cool again!

  2. In Wales, scientists are busy with large sheets of paper-like material. They are producing clothes which the user can paint and decorate any way they like. What’s more, it is possible to wash the clothes and paint them once again. Mary Smith, the director of the project, also stresses the fact that these clothes are environmental- friendly.

  3. But a truly modern idea of clothing is waiting for us in the capital of England, London. Nick Heldon of Fashion Co. presents us with something which looks like a Roman toga, a set of different belts, and a pair of scissors. We put the toga on and can do whatever we like with it: for example, out it very short, or put a belt on.

2. USE OF ENGLISH (15 minutes)

It happened on a crowded bus in the rush hour.

A boy of about twelve comfortably by the window,

watching the changing scenery and pretending not seeing the old man and woman standing near him. A gentleman said to the boy:

“If I give you 5 pounds you up and let me

have your seat?” “Sure!” answered the boy, smiling. The man took a five-pound note and handed it to the boy. The boy got the money

and stood up at once. “The seat for you”, said the man

to an old lady standing near him. She blushed and answered: “Thank you very much but I can’t take the seat for which you so much.”

“Don’t worry about that, madam. You see, I am an old teacher.

I have given the boy some money to teach him a lesson.

It is than money.”

The lady sat down and asked the boy : «Bob, will you thank this old gentleman for the 5 pounds he gave you?”
