Faces of Voronezh
First of all we must know the name of the man who founded Voronezh. It was Seeds Fedorovich Saburov . In 1585, the tsar ordered to send a person from the capital to built a new fortress on the bank of the river Voronezh. This man was Saburov.
Ivan Savich Nikitin He was a Russian poet. Ivan Savich was born in Voronezh in1824. He published only two collections of poems. The first collection was published in 1856, and the second in three years. There were works in prose. Nikitin opened the first book’s shop in Voronezh. Nikitin’s Poetry is quite different from other patriotic and folk poems. Nikitin died in 1861.
Aleksey Vasilievich Koltsov
Aleksey Vasilievich Koltsov was born on the 10th of March in Voronezh. His whole life is closely connected with our city. Aleksey Vasilievich Koltsov was a famous Russian poet, who wrote about the life of the Russian countryside, nature and peasant labor. His lyrical lines often become songs. He died in 1842.
Ivan Alekseevich Bunin was born in 1870 in Voronezh. He was a famous Russian writer and poet. Ivan Bunin is the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1933. Known for such works as the novel "Life of Arsenyev" (1927-1933, 1939), short stories, "Antonovsky apples" (1900), "The Gentleman from San Francisco" (1915), "Scream" (Paris, 1921), "in the spring of Judah "(New York, 1953) and other's. He died in 1953.
Andrei Platonovich Platonov (Klimentov)
was born in Yamskaya Sloboda not far from Voronezh on the 16 th of August in 1899. Until 1926 he lived and worked in Voronezh. Many of his books were written about Voronezh and its citizens. Andrey Platonovwas a real patriot of our city. He died in 1951. A lot of places are named in his honor : a street, a library, a gymnasium, a literary prize, International Arts Festival. There is a monument to the writer in Prospect Revolution Street.
Ostuzhev Alexander Alekseevich was born in 1874 in Voronezh. He was an actor, one of the representatives of the Romantic movement in dramatic art, a People's Artist of the USSR, a Laureate of the State Prize. He began his artistic career by working in the Voronezh Theatre (now – Koltsov’s Drama Theatre.). He died in 1953.
Samuel Yakovlevich Marshak was born in Voronezh in1898. He was an outstanding poet and a winner of numerous awards. He wrote a lot of poems for children. One of the city’s streets was named in honor of Samuel Yakovlevich Marshak. Ht died in 1968.
Vasily Mikhailovich Peskov was born in 1930. He was a famous writer, journalist, explorer, author of many books and essays. Peskov was a host of the program "In the animal world". He dedicated all his life to nature. He died in 2013. After his death Vasily Mikhailovich bequeathed to scatter ashes over the Voronezh region.
Gavriil NikolaevichTroyepolsky was born in Novo-Spassky in Borisoglebsk, Voronezh region in1905. He was a writer, a journalist, a laureate of the State Prize of the USSR. Troepolsky wrote about the beauty of his native land, the difficulties of rural life. He was famous for his story “White Bim, Black Ear “. This touching story is well- known not only among children but adults too. He died in 1995
Menglet George Pavlovich
He was born in Voronezh in 1912, where he spent his childhood. He studied at secondary school № 11 named after A.S. Pushkin. He was a famous film and theatre actor, People's Artist of the USSR. Menglet George Pavlovich died on the 1t of May in 2001. There is a memorial

Durov Anatoly Leonidovich
He was born in 1864.1916 From 1901 to 1916 he lived in Voronezh, where in 1907he bought the estate and made a real miracle - Museum Panopticon: a grotto with an aquarium and underground passages, castle ruins, and ancient statues. Now it is a museum. Durov was a satirical clown. In 1892 he worked as a trainer in the Voronezh circus.
Nikolai Nikolayevich Ge was a Russian painter, a master of portraits, historical and religious paintings, was born in 1831 in Voronezh, in the family of the landowner. His grandfather was an aristocrat emigrated from France in the late XVIII century. His famous work, "The Last Supper", "Peter I interrogates Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich at Peterhof", "Pushkin in St. Michael", "Catherine II at the tomb of Empress Elizabet“ and others. Ge died in 1994.
Ivan Nicolaevich Kramskoy was born in 1837 in Ostrogozhsk, Voronezh region. His career began at the age of thirty. In 1857 Kramskoj was admited to the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. But only in 1869, Ivan Kramskoj received the title of academician. He is famous for his paintings as "Christ in the Desert", "Inconsolable Grief", "Unknown" and others. In 1865 Kramskoi created the lead-painted Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. The great artist died in1887.
Nikolai Nilovich Burdenko was born in
1876. He was an outstanding scientist in the field of medicine, the famous neurosurgeon, a founder and the first president of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an honorary member of the International Society of Surgeons, Royal Society of London. From 1918 to 1923. lived and worked in Voronezh. Voronezh Medical Academy and one of the children's hospitals are named after Burdenko. He died in 1946.
Nikolai Gennadyevich Basov was born in 1922-01.07. He was a famous physicist, academician, one of the founders of Quantum Radio physics, Nobel laureate. His family moved to Voronezh in 1927. Nikolai Gennadyevich studied at school №11. Then continued to study at school №58 . Now this school is named Basov’s. Later he lived and worked in Moscow but very often the scientist visited Voronezh. He died in 2001.
Filipchenko Anatoliy Vasilievich was born in 1928 in Davydivka Liskinsky district of Voronezh region. He is a pilot-cosmonaut, Air Force Major General, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. Studied in Ostrogozhsk school №2 and after that in a special school in Voronezh Air Force. Made a number of scientific and technical experiments and researches in the near-Earth space. Bronze bust is set in the center of Ostrogozhsk in honor to Filipchenko Anatoliy Vasilievich.
Feoktistov Konstantin Pavlovich was born in1926 and lived Voronezh. He was a cosmonaut, a Hero of the Soviet Union, a Doctor of Technical Sciences, the member of the first in the history of space exploration crew. He was born during the occupation of Voronezh in 1942. Feoktistov Konstantin Pavlovich often came to Voronezh, performed in the factories, in the university, in his former school. One of the streets in Voronezh
and school №5 is named in honor of the famous countryman. He died in 2009
Maria Nicolaevna Mordasova was born in 1915. She was a performer of Russian folk songs and ditties, People's Artist of the USSR. In 1943-1972 years Mordasova was the soloist of the Voronezh Russian Folk Choir, then she worked in Voronezh Philharmonic. She died in 1997. There is a street and Mordasova’s apartment-museum in Voronezh.
Pyatnitskiy Mitrofan Efimovich was born in Voronezh province, in the village of Alexandrovka on the 3d of July in 1864, in the family of a priest. He graduated from Voronezh religious school. He was interested in folk music. He travelled across the country and collected folk songs, clothing, customs and others. He always believed that rural culture is very original and the great Russian spirit remained alive and strong. Pyatnitskiy Mitrofan Efimovich created a choir in 1910 and it exists nowadays.
