London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom, with a population of about eleven million. It’s one of the most important ports and one of the largest cities in the world. London is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old and beautiful. I was founded more than two thousand years ago.

Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster.

The City is the oldest pert of London, its financial and business centre. The heart of the City is the Stock Exchange.

Westminster is the most important part of the capital. It’s the administrative centre. The House of Parliament, the seat of the British Government is there. It’s a very beautiful building with two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben. Big Ben is really the bell which strikes every quarter of an hour. Opposite the House of Parliament is Westminster Abbey. It’s a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago. The tombs of many great statesmen, scientist and writes are there.

To the west of Westminster is the West End. Here we find most of the big shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theatres and concert halls. Picadilly Circus is the heart of London’s West End. In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and squares. There is Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St. James’s Park. Also, Buckingham Palace is situated in the west End. It’s the residence of the Queen.

To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. There are no parks or gardens in the East End and you can’t see many fine houses there. Most of the plants and factories are situated there.

London has many places of interest. Many of its ancient buildings still stand. The most famous of them are the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Most visitors also want to see the House of Parliament and Buckingham Palace the many magnificent museums. Such as the British Museum is the biggest museum in London. The museum is famous for its library – one of the richest in the world.

Everybody coming to London for the first time wants to see St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is the most famous building in the world, and it is also one of the greatest survivors. This is the third cathedral with this name which London has had. The two others were burnt down. Christopher Wren the cathedral’s final architect, was asked to restore it. The clock tower on the West Side houses the bell Known as Great Paul. At three metres dome and the cross on top is 365 feet from the ground. It is the second largest cathedral dome in the world. Only St. Paul’s in Rome is bigger.

The Tower of London is one of the most imposing and popular of London’s historical sites. The Tower has been many things: a palace, a fortress, a prison, a place of execution, a Zoo.
