What is better to read a book or to watch its screen version?

The problem of choice between a book and its screen version
has been a real dilemma nowadays. Why?

In my opinion reading a book is a work stimulating our mind and imagination. It takes us to places we have never been before, lets us explore the author's ideas through the prism of our personal experiences, thoughts and values. Moreover, reading is a long process, more interesting to a person with good imagination who "lives" with characters through the book.

On the other hand, in our fast-paced world we have adopted a fast-paced culture. So it is more simply to "be fed" a story from a screen. Furthermore, the nature of a movie is to entertain us by director's interpretation, which leaves us little chance for imagination. As a result, we are only spectators of events shown to us and opinions formed for us. So a movie is for people who do not wish to waste time on reading.

However, great directors create masterpieces. Wonderful performance can give written characters new depth. For example, "Gone with the Wind" will always be associated with unforgettable acting by V. Leigh and C. Gable who breathed life into the American classic.

On the contrary, the magic of a book can be easily ruined on the screen. Bondarchuk's "Tikhiy Don" was a great disappointment: the screen characters had little resemblance to the book, their acting looked like farce.

To sum up, both reading a book and seeing its screen version have its advantages and disadvantages. So, one should choose what is better for himself.
