Historical buildings

It dates from the Muslim period of the Golden Horde. It was conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552 and became the Christian See of the Volga Land. It is t he only surviving Tatar fortress in Russia and an important place of pilgrimage. It consists of an outstanding group of historic buildings dating from the 16th to 19th centuries, integrating remains of earlier structures of the 10th to 16th centuries.

It is one of the first open-air museums of wooden constructions in Russia. It started functioning in 1951. It is located near   the  Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia. The museum contains many unique items. Most of them are 17th–19th centuries artifacts.

The church was constructed by  Andrei Bogolyubsky . According to some sources, it was built to commemorate Andrei's victory over the

Bulgars and his son Izyaslav, who was slain in the battle.
