  1. Almost in every culture in the world there is a celebration of thanks for rich harvest. The American Thanksgiving began as a feast of thanksgiving almost four hundred years ago.

  2. First time people celebrated Thanksgiving in 1621. It lasted for 3 days. It was some kind of the harvest feast. People who celebrated that holiday were Pilgrims, the English Protestant settlers and the tribe of the Wampanoag. The menu that they had during that celebration differed greatly from the modern one. Their meals consisted of corn, shellfish and deer meat.

  3. The colonists had much to be thankful for, so they planned a feast. Local Indian chief and ninety Indians were present.

  4. In 1863 Lincoln was the first president of the USA who proclaimed an official holiday when people give thanks. Later, George Washington suggested the date November 26 as Thanksgiving Day. Then, after the Civil war, Abraham Lincoln suggested the last Thursday in November to be the day of Thanksgiving.

  5. Before Thanksgiving Day the number of charity events is growing. Americans are trying to help people who were not lucky. They organize charity dinners, concerts. Even in the subway stations there are tables were every american who wants to help brings food and donations.

  2. Annually people in the U.S. eat tremendous amounts of food. Researches show that about 45 million turkeys are consumed during Thanksgiving dinner. If Americans follow the same tendency this year they will spend about five billion dollars buying turkeys and trying to make their Thanksgiving menus perfect.

  3. Maybe some people will be greatly surprised with the fact that Thanksgiving is celebrated even by astronauts in space, even when they are apart from their families and friends. Their Thanksgiving menu consisted of rehydrated mash potatoes, turkey smoked in foil pouches and rehydrated green beans with mushrooms.

8 Работа с текстом. Активизация навыков чтения с детальным пониманием прочитанного

T: Now we are in America. Try to guess who could meet us. Native Americans. Let’s listen to their stories. Here you can see the text. Your task is to read, translate and answer the questions.

Native Americans.

Native Americans came from Asia. Over 20 000 years ago they traveled across the land between Siberia and Alaska.

When English colonists came to the New World on board the" Mayflower" the Native Americans met them and they were very friendly and helped them a lot. Those days people lived in small earth houses and grew their own food. Some Indians ate only grass, nuts and what fruit they could find. Other people were fishermen and lived in wooden houses. Most Native Americans were very peaceful. They wanted to live happily with nature and each other. They believed in many gods and thought that gods lived in trees, stones, water and fire. They believed their gods could bring success in hunting, farming and fishing. They often had special ceremonies with dances and music before they went hunting or fishing or when they began farming.

Native American songs and poems are a very important part of their traditions as they helped to keep their history and culture alive.

Another famous tradition was smoking of a peace pipe. When they smoked this pipe together with people they didn't know, it meant friendship and piece. Many years ago Native American tribes lived in all parts of the USA and hunted and fished wherever they chose. Now most of them live in poor lands to the west of Mississippi River.

Answer the questions.

1. Where did Native Americans come from?

2. How did they travel?

3. Where did they live? What did they eat?

4. What did Native Americans believe in?

5. Where do most Native Americans live now?

Are the statements TRUE or FALSE?

1 Native Americans came from India.

2 A lot of Indians were the Pilgrims’ enemies

3 Smoking of a peace pipe is an old American tradition.

4 Indians believed in many gods.

5 Now Indians are the poorest part of the American population.

Re: thanksgiving

Dear friends from Russia!

Thank you for your letter where you asked me about my favorite holidays. I think my photo will tell you everything.

I like taking pictures very much. This is my hobby. I take photos wherever I go.
I took this photo last 1 Thanksgiving Day when I visited my granny. She lives in Plymouth. It was a funny time.

In the picture you can see my 2 family . They are sitting at the 3 Thanksgiving dinner. They are happy and merry. They are eating traditional 4 Thanksgiving food 5 turkey, green beans with mushrooms and pumpkin. We enjoy the time we spend together.

I took this picture because I liked 6 my family and I wanted to remember that moment for a long time. I also wanted to show this photo to my 7classmates . They like such photos .

I decided to show this picture to you because I wanted to share my emotions and impressions with you.

Tell me about your favorite holidays in Russia.

Thanksgiving

Thank you for all my hands can hold
– apples red and melons old,
yellow corn both ripe and sweet,
peas and beans so good to eat!
Thank you for all my eyes can see
Lovely sunlight, field and tree,
white cloud – boats in sea-deep sky and butterfly
Thank you for all my ears can hear –
birds song echoing far and near,
songs of little stream, big sea,
cricket, bullfrog, duck and bee!
