Easter traditions

Easter is in its essence a religious holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also a celebration of life in general. For many it includes Easter eggs, cute bunnies and lot of chocolate. The following lines will tell you something about unique traditions of Easter celebration in different parts of our planet.

1. There are also non-religious Easter Traditions. One of these is wearing new clothes or new shoes. In America there are Easter Bonnet parades. Girls and women make their own original bonnets and march in a parade. The famous Easter Bonnet Parade on Fifth Avenue in New York City is a tradition from the middle of the nineteenth century. Thousands of people go to watch it.

2. Immigrants from Germany brought the tradition of the Easter Bunny to America. On Easter Day there are Easter egg hunts. Parents hide eggs and ask their children go and look for the eggs. When they find them they put them in colourful Easter baskets. The child with the most eggs is the winner.

3. There are many games that you can play with eggs. For example, you can roll eggs down a hill: the eggs must arrive at the bottom without breaking. On Easter Monday children from Washington, DC go the White House gardens and play all kinds of games with eggs. This tradition goes back to 1872, and the children of the President of the United States usually take part in the games.

4. Easter is the most important festival of the year in Greece. When the church bells ring at midnight the people proclaim Christos anesti – Christ is risen. The squares are filled with people carrying lighted candles. They eat and drink because they have been fasting for forty days. It is traditional for families to return to their home village and barbecue a whole lamb with their relatives. On Easter Monday people have picnics in the parks and fields.

5. On Maundy Thursday in Armenia priests wash the feet of 12 choosen boys, just as Christ washed the feet of the disciples. In the Bible, it is mentioned that Jesus, after the Passover, washed the feet of His disciples, directing them to do the same. This is followed till today, in some denominations. From among the people, twelve men are called forward and the priest ritually washes and dries their feet. Known as the Pedilavium, this was first practiced in the 13th century. The feet washing ceremony is a depiction of Christ's service to mankind. It signifies that the priests should follow the Christlike function to show their sacrifice and humility.

6. In Hungary village boys used to duck the girls in streams or fountains on Easter Monday. Now they just sprinkle the girls with perfume or ear-de-cologne for good luck and good health. The girls then give the boys eggs or invite them to their house for a meal which the girls themselves prepare and serve.

7. In Britain, the Queen takes part in the Ceremony of the Royal Maundy, which dates back to 13th century. This involves the distribution of Maundy Money to deserving senior citizens (one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign’s age), usually chosen for having done service to their religious community. They receive ceremonial red and white purses. The white purse contains coins made especially for the occasion — one coin for each year of the monarch’s reign. The red purse contains money in place of the gifts that used to be given to the poor.
