• Thanksgiving Day is a big festival in the USA and Canada. This festival is one of the most favourite holidays in the United States.

• They were European travellers who sailed on the ship “Mayflower” and tried to find the New World. The first winter was difficult and many people couldn’t survive without fresh food. In spring Native Indians taught pilgrims how to survive in America. To celebrate it pilgrims decided to have a Thanksgiving feast.

• The first Thanksgiving Day was celebrated by pilgrims in autumn in sixteen twenty-one.
• Now Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the last Thursday in November, and Canadians do it on the second Monday of October.

The Thanksgiving meal

• During this holiday tables were full of fresh food: corn, beans, turkey, venison, pumpkin.
• Turkey, sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce are popular food on this day and there’s always some sweet pumpkin pie for dessert.

Celebrating

• Thanksgiving Day is a traditional family holiday. Family and friends gather for a feast on Thanksgiving. Before the meal begins, people usually give thanks for their blessings.  They also give presents.
• Some cities have parades.
