Bespectacled and aged 16, it's just (Robbie) Williams

Photographer Chris Norton took the picture in the summer of 1990.

With his serious frown and wire-framed spectacles, he looks more like Harry Potter or Just William than one of Britain's biggest stars.

But this is Robbie Williams at 16 - just hours before he found out he had secured a place in a boyband called Kick It.

And just 18 months later, the band had been renamed Take That , scored a number one single with It Only Takes A Minute Girl , and Williams had become a pin-up for millions of teenage girls.

Photographer Chris Norton met Williams when the future pop star visited a holiday camp in Wales where his father, Pete Conway, worked.

Williams was just three when his father Conway and mother Jan divorced.

Although he stayed with his mother in Stoke-On-Trent, he used to visit his father during the summer holidays and got his first taste of stardom watching his father perform.

Williams was spending quality time with his father when he got a phonecall from his mother Jan, saying he had been accepted into Take That and told he had to come home.

His father recalled: 'He was absolutely wonderful and very talented from the word go.

'He was a little entertainer, and really made adults laugh with his impressions. He came with me to summer seasons and took it all in - he must have something in his genes.

'Rob was with me in South Wales when Jan rang and said he had to go home because he'd passed the Take That audition. He beat a lot of people at that audition, but you could never have envisaged it would be so big.'
