AUSTRALIAN ENGLISH (AUSSIE)

Australian English differs from other varieties of English in vocabulary, accent, pronunciation, register, grammar and spelling.

Three types of Australian Dialects

• Cultivated

• Broad

• General

PHONETICS DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BritISH and Australian English

• Speech of an Australian sounds smoother and more melodic

• The vowel in closed syllable (in words such as  cap ,  sad ,  mad etc .) is often pronounced like  ɜː instead of   æ

• Britain sound combinations  t+j ,  d+j ,  s+j ,  z+j  in aussie become  ʤ ,  ʃ ,  tʃ . For example, the word  education  in British will be pronounced like  [ˌedju-] , but in aussie -  [ˌeʤu] .

Australian Pronunciation

• Try to nasalize
• Shrink long words
• Avoid terminology, try to replace them with simplier words
• Don’t pronounce R’s and G’s at the end of words

GRAMMATIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN British and Australian English

• There are a lot of differences observed in nouns in classical English compared to Aussie
• Shall  in Australian English is used only to induce an action:  Shall we go out ?
• Should  is used quite rarely , it is usually replaced by would .
• Old-fashioned forms like  whilst ,  amongst  still apear in Australian English.
