Thames
The capital of England, the famous city of London, is built on its banks. Everyone probably knows the Tower Bridge over the Thames.
The Thames, by our standards, is not a very large river. Its length is only 334 km, and its width within London is 200-250 m. But its main advantage is not its size, but rather its history and the cities on its banks.
From history Julius Caesar made his first military campaign in England in 55 BC. e. He gave the name to the River Thames (or Tamesis), which in Celtic means "expanding"
The first bridge across the river was built in 1209 in London. It was one of the first stone bridges in Europe. The world's first underwater tunnel was also built on the Thames, in 1840.
Tributaries of the Thames
There are 38 tributaries of the Thames.
Main:
on the left - Charwell, Thame, Coln, Lee, Roding;
right - Kenneth, Loddon, Way, Maul and Medway
Wildlife of the Thames
In the waters of the Thames is found: eel, pike, roach, bream, rudd, silver bream and other fish
Origin of name
- During the era of Roman conquests, Roman legions repeatedly reached Britain. Julius Caesar made his first military campaign in Britain in 55 BC. e. A year later, he returned there, but the river, which he named Tamesis, prevented him from advancing further. But the Romans were able to conquer the Britons only after 90 years under the emperor Claudius.
The Thames is a place of rest
- Before Westminster Bridge was built in 1740, the only way to cross on foot to the other side was London Bridge, which was later reconstructed and replaced by a new one in the 1820s. The piers supporting the 19 vaults of the original stone structure largely prevented the free flow of the river.
Competitions on the water
- Various water events and competitions are very often held on the Thames, exciting rowing races are quite spectacular, in which Cambridge and Oxford, eternal rival universities, compete with each other. Every year, the Henlein Regatta is also held here, which is already popular throughout Europe.
- In addition to navigation, the Thames is a river with well-developed public transport, original river trams and boats run here, as well as tourist and pleasure transport.
Londons sights.
- On one of the shores is the famous London Eye - a Ferris wheel, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are not far away. More than a hundred bridges have been built from one bank of the Thames to the other, each of which is famous for its history and even has interesting legends. One of the bridges has a “gate of criminals” - at one time, all convicts were delivered through such a river entrance along the Thames to the Tower
