The climate

• The town has a continental climate.
• The summer is warm and sometimes hot. Temperatures can reach about 35°C.
• The winter is continuous and quite cold. The lowest winter temperature is about -40°C.

• Abakan is located in the center of a basin (Khakassko-Minusinskaya Kotlovina).
• It has the Abakan river and the Abakan ridge near it.
• Also there are many huge fields and high mountains.

• Earthquakes are not a rare phenomenon in Abakan.
• There are also industrial explosions that cause earthquakes.
• The Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam is a potential threat for the town.

Environmental problems

• Abakan is a pretty clear place.
• However the Abakan Aluminum Plant and the Abakan Thermoelectric Plant impact on the environment.

Significant events

• In 1969, Abakan was flooded. All industrial enterprises, 7 000 houses turned up fully flooded. The railway and road bridges over Tasheba were demolished.
• In 2009, most people thought Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam fully broke. There was a big panic in the town. But nothing bad happened to Abakan after all.

• Abakan is developing and quickly getting better.
• Population is increasing every year.
• New houses, roads, different buildings, parks are built.
