So, what is IBM?
IBM is an American company headquartered in Armonk, New York, one of the world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of hardware and software, as well as IT services and consulting services.
History IBM
In 1890, the US population census took place. To process its results, the "electric tabulator" invented by Herman Hollerith was first used. Thanks to him, the census data could be processed in just one year, whereas the previous census of 1880 was processed for eight years [6]. Encouraged by success, the inventor discovered the company Tabulating Machine Company in 1896.
June 16, 1911 based on CTR (Computing Tabulating Recording). She included the Computing Scale Company of America, the Tabulating Machine Company (TMC), and the International Time Recording Company. The incorporated firm let out wide assortment of the electric equipment. Because of the complexity in managing a diverse business, Thomas Watson was invited to the post of general director in May 1914.
In 1924, with access to the Canadian market and expansion of product range, CTR changes its name to International Business Machines or, abbreviatedly, IBM.
Exploring the expanses of the Internet in search of the origin of the name, I found two versions of Wikipedia, one article by an IBM employee and an article in the newspaper.
Information from wikipedia
The widespread nickname of the company is Big Blue, which can be translated from English as "big blue" or "blue giant". There are several versions regarding this nickname. According to one of them the name came from mainframes, supplied by the company in the 1950s-1960s. They were the size of a room and had a blue color. According to another theory, the nickname simply refers to the company logo. Another version claims that this name comes from the company's former dress code, which required many workers to wear shirts and blue suits.
Article from the newspaper
“ No company in the computer business inspires the loyalty that IBM does, and the company has accomplished this with its almost legendary customer service and support … As a result, it is not uncommon for customers to refuse to buy equipment not made by IBM, even though it is often cheaper. ‘I don’t want to be saying I should have stuck with the “Big Blue,”’ says one IBM loyalist. ‘The nickname comes from the pervasiveness of IBM’s blue computers’”.
