THE USE OF THE PASSIVE VOICE 1. We don’t know who the subject is, or it’s not important who the subject is. Somebody  cleaned  the room . The room was cleaned. 2. When it is obvious who the subject is because it is the person who usually does it: The cleaner cleaned  the room . The room was cleaned.

SENTENCES THAT CANNOT BE CHANGED INTO THE PASSIVE VOICE Not all verbs in sentences take an  object . Some sentences are complete without an object . Example. John  slept well. John  lives far away.

3 STEPS OF FORMULATING THE PASSIVE VOICE Put the object at the beginning of the sentence. Conjugate the verb ‘to be’ in the same tense as the active sentence. Put the main verb in the Past Participle form. Example 1. The postman delivers  the mail. Step 1. - the object is ‘ the mail ’ Step 2. – the tense is Present Simple = ‘ be ’ Step 3. - the verb ‘ deliver ’ in PP form is ‘ delivered ’. The mail is delivered .

3 STEPS OF FORMULATING THE PASSIVE VOICE

  • Put the object at the beginning of the sentence.

The house is being painted . Note! Put the verb ‘ to be ’ in plural when necessary. The house s  are being painted .

Example 2. The workers are painting our house .

ADDING THE DOER OF THE ACTION If we want to put the subject in the sentence we use ‘by’. My breakfast was prepared by my mom .

REMEMBER ! It the active sentence begins with ‘no-one’ or ‘nobody’, the passive sentence will be negative Nobody  watched  TV . TV  was not watched . If there is a preposition between the verb and the object, the preposition will remain after the verb. I am looking for  the textbook . The textbook is being looked for .
