The Olympic Games have a very long history. They began in 776 BC in Greece.

The ancient Olympics, held every four years, occurred during a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus.

The athletes didn’t get medals, they were awarded with crowns of leaves.

The motto - Citius, Altius, Fortius

(Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger")

The flag of the Olympic Games is the white flag with the Olympic rings.

Five interlocked rings of blue, black, red, yellow and green colours symbolize the five continents united into the Olympic movement.

The blue ring symbolizes Europe, the black ring – Africa, the red ring – America, the yellow ring – Asia, the green ring – Australia.

The Olympic flame is a symbol of the Olympic Games. The fire was introduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since.

Baron Pierre de Coubertin,

a French educator and historian,

is the founder of the International Olympic Committee and

the modern Olympic Games.

The top prize at the first modern Olympics was the silver medal.

The 1912 Olympics was the last time that gold medals were solid gold. Ever since, they've been silver with gold plating.
