• The island Valaam is situated in the northern part of Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe. There is a monastery on the island. It was built by Novgorod people in the 14 th century to defend the Russian land borders from Sweden.

The monastery was ruined many times but was always rebuilt. The nature of the island is very beautiful and unique. There are many different plants and trees on the island. You can get there by ship.

The Island Kizhy

Kizhy is a small island. It is situated in Lake Onega. Kizhy is called a “Russian Wonder”.

The most precious thing in Kizhy is 22- cupola Cathedral of the Transfiguration. You can get there by ship.

• The church was built in 1714. It was built without a single nail with the help of an axe. There is a legend that the church was built by Master Nestor. He threw his axe into the lake after the construction of the church.

In 1960 the museum of architecture and ethnography was opened on the island.

• “ Martial Waters” is a spa. It is situated 50 kilometers from Petrozavodsk, the capital of Karelia. You can get there by bus or by car.

• “ Martial Waters” help to treat diseases. A worker from Konchezero discovered “Martial Waters” in 1714.

Peter the First declared them a Russian Spa. He visited “Martial Waters” four times.

• “ Martial Waters” were named after the God of War and Iron – Mars.

• But after Peter’s death the spa was forgotten. In 1964 the spa “Martial Waters” was opened again. You can get there by bus or car.

The Preserve Kivach is situated 10 kilometers from “Martial Waters”. It was organized in 1931. The territory of the preserve is covered with forest. There are many beautiful lakes, wild animals and birds in it.

• Two beautiful rivers the Suna and the Sandalka flow there. The preserve is famous for its wonderful waterfall. The waterfall has the name Kivach too. It’s about 11 meters high. It’s one of the greatest in Europe. It has 4 rapids.

Marble Canyon

• Marble Canyon is one of the most interesting wonders of Karelia. It is situated in Sortavala district in Ruskeala. The film “The Dawns Here Are Quiet” was shot in Ruskeala. You can get there by car. .

• The marble of the Canyon was used for construction of many cathedrals and palaces in St.Petersburg. Nowadays there is a “Mountain park Ruskeala” there. Many tourists visit it all year round.
