The Possessive Case

В английском языке два падежа:
- общий (the Common case)
- притяжательный (the Possessive case)
Общий падеж присущ всем существительным. Это та форма, в которой мы их находим в словаре.
Притяжательный падеж служит определением к другому существительному и отвечает на вопрос Чей?, обозначая принадлежность предмета. Его форма присваивается, в основном, одушевленным существительным.
Окончание притяжательного падежа читается как [s] после глухих согласных звуков, как [z] – после звонких согласных и гласных, и как [iz] – после s, ss: [s]; sh: [ʃ]; ch, tch: [tʃ]; x: [ks]:
cat's [kæt s ]
dog's [dɔ:g z ]
Mary's ['meri: z ]
actress's ['æktrəs iz ]
Правила образования притяжательного падежа
1) прибавление к существительному апострофа и окончания -ʼs, если оно стоит в единственном числе:
Nick ʼs car
my sister ʼs room
2) если имя собственное оканчивается на -s, -ss, -x, то допускается как употребление апострофа и окончания -ʼs, так и просто апострофа -ʼ:
Max ʼs friend = Max ʼ friend.
3) притяжательный падеж существительных во множественном числе обозначается одним только знаком апострофа :
the boys ' books
the workers ' tools
4) е сли существительное во множественном числе не имеет окончания -s , то притяжательный падеж образуется, как и в единственном числе, путем прибавления апострофа и окончания -'s :
the children 's toys
the workmen 's tools
5) когда два лица или более являются обладателями одного и того же предмета, окончание притяжательного падежа прибавляется к последнему существительному:
Peter and Helen 's flat is large.
6) при упоминании существительных, связанных союзом "and", и не являющихся общим определителем , апостроф и окончание -'s ставится после конкретного определяющего слова :
I like Shelly's and Byron's poems.
7) притяжательный падеж сложных существительных образуется путем прибавления апострофа и окончания -'s к последнему слову , входящему в состав существительного:
the commander-in-chief 's order
my brother-in-law 's library
Существительные, обозначающие неодушевлённые предметы, вещества и отвлечённые понятия, как правило, в форме родительного падежа не употребляются, а образуют оборот с предлогом "of" :
the roof of this house
Среди неодушевленных существительных есть исключения , которые можно поставить в форму притяжательного падежа через ’s :
- существительные, обозначающие время и расстояние: today’s newspaper, a mile’s distance
- названия стран и городов: Germany’s industry, New York’s streets
- названия газет и организаций: the Guardian’s article, Red Cross’s volunteers
- слова nation, country, city, town: country ’s treasures
- слова ship, car, boat: ship’s name, car’s speed
- слова nature, water, ocean: ocean’s temperature, nature’s beauty
- названия месяцев и времени года: January’s frosts, summer’s days
- названия планет: Saturn’s rings
- некоторые устойчивые выражения: at death’s door, at arm’s length, a hair’s breadth, at a snail’s pace и другие.
- какое-либо место (магазин, дом, мастерская и т.д.):
at the grocer’s, at the buther’s, at the dentist’s
