With a population of about 145,952,314 people, Russia is the most populated country in Europe and the ninth most populated country in the world. There are a great number of small towns and big cities in Russia.


Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk was originally established in 1893 as a settlement for builders working on the railway bridge across the Ob River. In less than 70 years, Novosibirsk’s population reached over a million. Now the populationis 1,633,595 people. Under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, Novosibirsk became one of the largest industrial centers of Siberia. Novosibirsk is Russia's scientific centre. Novosibirsk is home to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, as well as the Novosibirsk Zoo. Novosibirsk subway has 15 stations. The city is served by Tolmachevo Airport, the busiest airport in Siberia.


Yekaterinburg

The city is located on the Iset River. The population is up to 2.2 million residents. Yekaterinburg is the fourth-largest city in Russia and one of Russia's main cultural and industrial centres. Yekaterinburg was founded on 18 November 1723 and named after Yekaterina I, the wife of Russian emperor Peter the Great. Koltsovo International Airport is an international airport serving Yekaterinburg. The Yekaterinburg Metro was opened on 26 April 199 and it serves 9 stations. This city is a relatively large tourist center. A significant part of tourists visit it to honor the memory of the last Russian emperor and his family killed by the Bolsheviks in the basement of the Ipatiev House in 1918. Although the house no longer exists, a plain wooden cross marks its site. There are about 50 different museums in Yekaterinburg.


Kazan  Kazan is one of Russia's oldest cities, located on the Volga River, 820 km away from Moscow. It is the capital of Tatarstan which is home to 115 nationalities. Kazan was founded more than 1,000 years ago. The city lies on the Volga and the Kazanka rivers. Kazan is the fifth-largest city in Russia. Kazan international airport – is one of the largest airports in Russia, the best regional airport in Russia. The Kazan Metro is a rapid-transit system that serves the city of Kazan. It has 11 stations. Kazan has lots of attractions. The Kazan Kremlin  is the oldest part of Kazan included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The residence of the Head of the Republic of Tatarstan and the Government of Tatarstan are located here.

Kul-Sharif Mosque is the main mosque of Tatarstan located on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin. This is an amazing building with four minarets. The mosque has a museum of Islam, as well as observation balconies for tourists.

The Annunciation Cathedral is the oldest building of the Kazan Kremlin. This outstanding monument of Russian architecture of the 16th century is the most remote example of the Pskov school of architecture.


Volgograd

 Volgograd is considered to be founded in 1589. At that time the city had a different name - Tsaritsyn. The city lies on the western bank of the Volga. The population is 1,010,310. Volgograd is the sixteenth-largest city by population size in Russia.

The Volgograd International Airport provides air links to major Russian cities as well as Antalya, Yerevan and Aktau. Volgograd's public transport system includes a light rail service known as the Volgograd Metrotram. The line consists of 22 stations along the Volga River.The Volga River still is a very important communication channel.

A memorial complex commemorating the battle of Stalingrad with the sculpture The Motherland Calls, was erected on the Mamayev Kurgan. The Panorama Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad is a large cultural complex that sits on the shore of the Volga river. The Volgograd Planetarium was a gift from East Germany in honor of what would have been Stalin's 70th birthday.
