SCOTLAND AND BURNS'S NIGHT

Pupil 1. Scotland is a country that occupies the northern part of Great Britain and the nearby islands - the Hebrides, the Orkneys and the Shetlands. (Ученик работает с картой)
Pupil 2. It’s an amazing fact that Scotland has nothing in common with its Southern neighbour - England except the official language and the left-hand drive. Scotland has their own laws, parliament, currency, the Gaelic language and peculiar culture. The Scots are proud of their castles and ghosts, kilts and bagpipes, whisky and folk dances, past and history.
Pupil 3. The Scottish anthem is called “The Flower of Scotland”. It tells us about the historic event that happened in 1287 when Scottish clans under the leadership of William Wallace, a Scotland’s hero, beat the Army of the proud English king Edward the First.

Pupil 4. Scotland is the hilly country with the Grampians in the south and the Highlands in the north. Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and a great attraction for tourists. They enjoy watching Highland Games. Such events as Stone Push, Caber Toss, Sheaf Toss, Pole Climbing, Tug of War are very popular with spectators.
Pupil 5. It’s interesting to know that since the 18th century the Scotts have been forbidden to carry any weapon - a knife, a spear or a sword. So the Scots exercised their mind and body in their own way - they lifted, ran and tossed heavy objects - stones, cabers, pressed heaps of straw and hay to remain strong, dexterous and intelligent. The Highland Games are always accompanied by bagpipe music and Highland dances.

Pupil 6. Robert Burns is the national pride of Scotland. His name is known overworld. He wrote his poems, songs and lyrics chiefly in the Scottish dialect. Though Robert Burns lived in the 18th century his birthday is still celebrated by Scotsmen on the 25th of January. This celebration is called Burns's Night. It is a holiday when his memory is glorified, his poems are recited, his songs are sung.

Pupil 7. Robert Burns was a great patriot of Scotland. In his poems he sang the dignity of Scottish peasantry, true love and friendship, brotherhood of all people. Robert Burns praised honest poverty and the splendid beauty of Highland landscapes and locks.

Pupil 8. His poem “My Heart's In The Highlands” tells us about the wild
and misty mountains that sweep down in deep valleys called “glens”, white water rivers and vast heather moors.

Pupil 9. The talented Soviet poet S.Yakovlevich Marshak translated Burns's poems into Russian and made Russian people love his poetry. We highly esteem his poems because they find a way to every heart. Many of his poems have become our favourite songs - “A Red,Red Rose” by Vladimir Shainskiy, “Oh, Wert Though In The Cauld Blast” by Alexander Gradskiy, “For The Sake Of Somebody” by Andrei Petroff.

Pupil 10. Robert Burns was sincere to the core and every reader of his poems feels it. The main things that make him memorable are his great love for people and his protest for the independence of humanity.
