Master class “Useful Tips on Teaching Word Formation while Preparing for the National Exam”

Karapetyan Lyudmila

Teacher of English, School №38, Kursk

e-mail: [email protected]

This activity demonstrates the key сoncepts of teaching students of 4-11 forms word formation while preparing for the National Exam. It includes both a traditional and creative approach which makes students motivated, and helps teachers involve them in the process of learning.

The key words: word formation, methods and approaches, the National Exam, parts of speech, suffixes, prefixes, creative work.

The matter of special concern for both teachers and students while preparing for the national exam is mastering its format.

The problem is how to help students understand it, find the most effective ways of teaching them to work at every aspect (Listening, Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary, Word Formation, Writing).

This master class is supposed to:

  • give some tips on working at Word Formation;

  • enrich students’ vocabulary;

  • develop skills of working with dictionaries and reference material;

  • systematize knowledge about ways of word formation;

  • improve spelling skills;

  • develop the skill of choosing the proper part of speech to be used in the gap.

The following material is based on the textbooks by I.N. Vereshchagina, O.V. Afanasyeva (advanced learning). Pupils start getting acquainted with elementary models of word building in the second form learning activities and professions:

to work – a worker to play – a player

to sing – a singer to run – a runner

to teach – a teacher to jump – a jumper

The topic is further expanded in the fourth - eleventh forms and this process demands more understanding and method as pupils come across:

  1. a variety of suffixes (SLIDE 1);

b) conversion (SLIDE 2);

c) forming compounds (SLIDE 3);

d) sound interchanges (SLIDE 4);

e) negative prefixes (SLIDE 5).

All these numerous ways of word formation should be brought to a clear system before taking the national exam. For this reason students should be acquainted with the meaning of some suffixes and prefixes as well as the parts of speech they form. (SLIDES 6, 7, 8).To train this material pupils of primary school (e.g. fourth – formers) may already be offered to do the following tasks:

Task 1

  1. Choose from the text those sentences that contain the derivatives of the verb Collect (SLIDE 9) denoting:

  1. the doer of the action;

  2. the process;

  3. the result of the action;

  4. activity itself.

  1. Working in groups make up the same derivatives with the verbs TO INVENT/TO DECORATE/TO TRANSLATE and compose your own stories.

There is often a problem using suffixes –er/-or. As English is mostly the language of exceptions not rules it’s necessary to teach students the skills of working with dictionaries and reference material. This task may be offered to two pupils or groups (eighth-formers).

Task 2

Classify the following nouns into two groups: those written with –er or –or.

  1. announc… 5. decorat… 9. explor… 13. sail…

  2. bank… 6. design… 10. groc… 14. senat…

  3. butch… 7. direct… 11. lawy… 15. ush…

  4. conduct… 8. doct… 12. office… 16. tail…

(SLIDE 10)

Task 3

It’s not always effective to give students a ready rule. They should learn to solve a problem and formulate the rule. Doing crosswords can help and entertain them. (SLIDES 11, 12, 13, 14). Crosswords should be thoroughly thought of and they should give students some clues when they deal with unknown material. (Application form 1).

Task 4

This task resembles making up cinquains but it differs in some ways. Students are given the following scheme and work with derivatives: (SLDE 15)

Verb

Participle I, II

Nouns

Adjectives

Adverb

The next stage is either to compose a short poem with any of these words or (if it is difficult) to make up stories of their own. Here are some examples of such an activity. (SLIDES 16, 17)

  1. A good collection I collect 2. A lot of things

Collecting badges, stamps and coins. Has man invented

I’m a collector – Mother’s pride Inventions are to improve our lives.

Collective work mustn’t be denied. It’s not an easy thing – inventing

Let all inventors live and strive!

Task 5

This may be either a group or an individual task for two students. They are to find all the possible derivatives to the given verb (e.g. To imagine). The winner is the student (group) whose “chain” is longer. The variants are compared. It goes without saying that a special attention is paid to the translation of the words.

Task 6

Some very useful additional exercises can be borrowed from Training Books by Yu.S. Veselova “Preparing for the National Exam”, 6-9 forms. (Английский язык. Сборник тренировочных и проверочных заданий. ( В формате ГИА). Here can be found exercises on training the formation of both a single part of speech and mixed ones. (SLIDES 18, 19, 20). At this stage students come to the necessity to understand clearly the semantical structure of a sentence, semantical connections of words. It is desirable for students to get the translation of a sentence, but it’s not always possible because of the richness of the English vocabulary. So, it’s recommended to use different clues defining what part of speech to form:

a/an +N

a/an + Adj +N

Adv + Adj

Adv + Adv

V + Adv

Task 7 (SLIDE 21)

Further on, students come to doing training variants for tenth-eleventh-formers feeling less stressed as they are already used to the format.

It goes without saying, that the role of traditional training exercises, such as writing dictations, training new vocabulary in exercises, reading, translating and listening to texts, shouldn’t be lessened. Achieving high results in preparing for the national examination completely depends on the complex approach in teaching and studying including creative work. Hopefully, this master class has proved it.
