Theme: Literature. The Lost World

Objectives: 1. to introduce new vocabulary

2. to develop skills in reading and translating from English into Russian

3. to practise skills in completing gaps in the text with parts of the sentences

4. to develop skills in listening

5. to broaden student’s background with the works by Sir A.C. Doyle

6. to bring up students’ respect to other cultures


Aids: Starlight 11, a CD recorder, a CD with the audio of the text.


The Course of the Lesson

I 1. Greeting. Organisation moments.

2. Warming up

Do you believe that time travelling is possible? Who of famous scientists tried to understand the process of it? What historical periods would you like to visit?

Now your task is to guess the word by the meaning: a reptile some types of which were extremely large, that stopped existing thousands of years ago. Right! It is a dinosaur. What do you know about them? How did they look like? What were their eating habits (herbivorous |hərˈbɪvərəs| ,  carnivorous |kɑːrˈnɪvərəs| )? Do you know the films where these reptiles were depicted ( Jurassic |dʒʊˈræsɪk| Park ) ? Maybe you know any books about dinosaurs?

Now look at the author on p. 124. Who is that? How is Doyle connected with dinosaurs? Right! He is an author of the book “The Lost world” about them. What do you know about Doyle in general? Let us read some information about him.


II. 1. Read the biography of Doyle p. 124

2. Answer my questions: 1. What genres did Doyle work with? 2. What character of his books is known all over the world? 3. Who is the main character of „The lost world“ ? What is his profession? 4. Where and with whom does he travel? 5. What does he see there?

  1. Would you like to follow the adventures of the main character? Why?

  2. Is it safe to encounter a pterodactyl? Why?

  3. What kind of people lived when dinosaurs existed?

  4. Why do explorers usually make their way to unusual places?

  5. Why do explorers from the picture peep over the bushes?

  6. Would you be entranced if you saw a pterodactyl?

  7. Do you think pterodactyls lived in pits?

  8. How do you understand stagnant water?

  9. Find the words from the list which describe the appearance of the creature.

  10. When pterodactyls flied what did they do with their wings?

  11. Is it safe to huddle and linger when you face any danger?

  12. What kinds of brutes can whizz?

  13. What can you make prods with?

  14. When do people usually stagger?

  15. Is a trunk a good place to hide from a pterodactyl?

  16. What is your reaction to dizzy odour?

  17. What brutes can be fierce?


4. You have 3-5 minutes to read the text on p 124 and fill in the gaps ( ex.). What are your answers?

5. Listen to the audio and check if you have done everything correctly.

6. Now I want you to read the text and translate it into Russian paragraph after paragraph.

7. Answer my questions:

- How is it possible to understand that Lord John is shocked?

- What do the explorers see in the pit?

- Describe the way the herd of the brutes live

- Why do the brutes start to attack the travelers?

- How do they try to protect themselves? Are the efforts successful?

- Where do the travelers find a safe place? Why is it safe there?

8. Let us discuss the pterodactyls in more details ( ex. 7 a p. 125). Find the words in the text describing them. One of you should describe the brute.
