ҮМ-31 Text “The most popular British writers”
Exercise 1. Read the text.
The most popular British writers
William Shakespeare is a famous English writer. He was born on the 23rd of April 1564. William lived in a small English town Stratford-on-Avon. When he was a child he went to a grammar school.
William Shakespeare worked as an actor. He acted at the London theatre called “The Globe”. In 1594 William Shakespeare wrote his famous tragedy “Romeo and Juliet”.
William Shakespeare wrote about 37 plays and many poems.
Agatha Christie is a famous English writer. She was born on the 15th of September 1890 in England.
Agatha didn׳t go to school and got her education at home. In 1914 she got married. She took part in the First World War. She was a nurse.
Agatha Christie began to write detective stories in 1920. Her first novel was “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” («Таинственное преступление в Стайлсе»). She became famous in 1926. Agatha Christie wrote 68 novels, 17 plays and more than a hundred stories. Agatha Christie is “Queen of Crime”
James Hadly Chase is a famous English novelist. He was born on the 24th of December 1906 in London. In 1939 James worked as a bookseller. He began to write in 1939. James Hadly Chase became famous in 1939. His first novel was “No Orchids For Miss Blandish” («Никаких орхидей для мисс Блендиш»). James Hadly Chase wrote about 80 books.
Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) a well-known English writer who wrote one of the first novels in the history of English literature. It was Robinson Crusoe (1719). He was born in London. He visited many countries and met many people. That helped him to write his stories.
Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) a famous English writer, was born in a poor family in Dublin, Ireland. He wanted the Irish people to be happy. He wrote satirical novels. The most famous novel is Gulliver’s Travels. It is about England of his time.
Jane Austen (1775 – 1817) an English novelist, whose works include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma. Her masterful use of language and irony made Austen one of the most influential and honored novelists in English literature.
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) an English novelist, the greatest one of all. His The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield are very popular. He describes life in Victorian England and shows how hard it was for the poor and for children.
Joanne Rowling was born in July 1965 at Yate General Hospital in England and grew up in Chepstow. She is the author of one of the most popular British children’s books about young magician Harry Potter.
