What is diabetes mellitus? Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood sugar.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus , insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease of the endocrine system characterized by chronic hyperglycemia (elevated blood glucose levels) resulting from insufficient production of the hormone insulin.
