London
- London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London is situated in the southeast of England
- The most well-known areas of London are The West End, The City of London, The East End
- London occupies over 620 square miles and has a population of 8,5 million people
The Tower of London
It is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England.
The London Eye
It is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London.
The entire structure is 135 metres tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 metres.
Buckingham Palace
It is the London residence and principal workplace of the monarchy of the United Kingdom.
The palace is often at the centre of state occasions and royal hospitality. It has been a focus for the British people at times of national rejoicing.
St Paul’s Cathedral
It sits at the top of Ludgate Hill , the highest point in the City of London.
It was built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1675-1710 to replace the old Cathedral that was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. Christopher Wren is buried there.
Tower Bridge
It was opened in 1894. It is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name.
The British museum
The British Museum is a museum dedicated to human history and culture, located in the Bloomsbury area of London. The British Museum was established in 1753 largely based on the collections of the physician and scientist Sir Hans Sloan. The museum first opened to the public on 15 January 1759 in Montagu House in Bloomsbury.
Westminster abbey
It is a large and famous Anglican church in London. It’s the shrine of Edward the Confessor and the burial place of many kings and queens. Since it was built it has been the place where the coronations of Kings and Queens of England have been held.
The Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, is the seat of the two parliamentary houses of the United Kingdom: The House of Lords and the House of Commons. The most famous feature of the Houses of Parliament is its clock tower, known as Big Ben.
Big Ben
Big Ben is the second bell in the clock tower at the northern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. The first was damaged in 1856. Big Ben is the biggest four-faced, chiming clock in the world. It weighs 13 tons. It was built by Sir Adam Jonas from Norfolk, England in 1858, by his team of architects.
Trafalgar Square
It is a public space and tourist attraction in London, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross. At its centre is Nelson’s Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. The name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar, a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars over France and Spain which took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar in Los canos de meca, a town in Spain.
Hyde Park
Hyde Park was created in 1536 by Henry VIII for hunting. It is one of the largest parks in London, and one of the Royal Parks of London, famous for its Speakers’ Corner. Hyde Park’s Speakers Corner has acquired an international reputation for demonstrations and other protests due to its tolerance of free speech.
London Bridge
London Bridge refers to several historical bridges that have spanned the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark, in central London. The current crossing, which opened to traffic in 1973, is a box girder bridge. This replaced a 19 th -century stone-arched bridge, which in turn superseded a 600-year-old medieval structure.
Madam Tussauds
It is a wax museum in London with branches in a number of major cities. It was founded by wax sculptor Marie Tussaund. Madam Tussaunds is a major tourist attraction in London, displaying waxworks of historical and royal figures, film stars and sports stars.
The National Gallery
It is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in Central London. Founded in 1824, it houses a collection of over 2,300 paitings dating from the mid-13 th century to 1900.
