The best of British inventors: George Stephenson

Performed by Bragina Darya, 10 th form student, MBEI Kalacheevskaya secondary school № 1

George Stephenson was born on 9 June 1781 in England. He was the second child of Robert and Mabel Stephenson, neither of whom could read or write. Robert was the fireman, earning a very low wage, so there was no money for schooling. At 17, Stephenson became an engineman at Water Row Pit in Newburn nearby. George realised the value of education and paid to study at night school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic – he was illiterate until the age of 18. In 1802, he married for the first time and, in order to get more money, began repairing watches

In the early years of the nineteenth century, there were several prototypes of machines that worked with steam, but were not too efficient. Stevenson had the opportunity to see one of them in 1813 when visiting a nearby coal mine. There he added some wheels to one of the steam engines to facilitate the removal of coal. When Stevenson examined it, he was quickly convinced that he could improve it. Stevenson created his first device, which he called a Blucher. As a novelty, she optimized the steam exhaust system and added a boiler. The result was satisfactory.

The next step in his career took place in 1821. In the same year, Stevenson learned that he was to build a railway network between Stockton and Darlington. He immediately went to the area to meet with the promoter of the project, Edward Reese, who was convinced that it was possible to do the same, but to build a steam locomotive. On September 27, 1825, after many years of work and resolution of emerging difficulties, railway transport began its journey. A Stevenson locomotive stood in front of the cars and transported 450 people at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour.

George Stevenson went down in history as the inventor of the modern railway. Not only to create a steam locomotive, but also to be responsible for planning the first railway line in the world. Although it seems like a minor invention compared to a locomotive, the truth is that a lamp for miners has helped save many lives. Safety measures at that time were very unreliable, and accidents were frequent.
