Mother Dog: Look, Father, how nice our little son is!

(Puppy raises his head proudly.)Sonny, my dear sonny, say “How do you do “to your father!

Puppy: How do you do, daddy!

Father: How clever our son is!

Mother: Now, my darling, bring me a ball, please!

(Puppy brings a ball.)

Father: Oh, my dear sonny, you are strong, you can do everything!

(Puppy raises his head higher.)

Mother: Now I must go and bring some meat and bones for you, my dear little sonny-boy!

Father: And I must go and say bow-wow.

Mother: My dear son, you may play here, in the yard!

Puppy: Yes, mummy! Good bye, daddy!

(Father and Mother go away.)

Puppy :( walks up and down) I’m clever, I’m strong, I can do everything! I’m clever, I’m strong,I can do everything!

(The Frog jumps up to him.)

The Frog: Croak, croak, hello, Puppy Little!

Puppy: Hello, Frog! Look at me! I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything! Mummy says so, daddy says so.

Frog: Can you jump? Look! (Frog jumps.)

Puppy: Of course, I can! I can do everything! Mummy and daddy say so!

(Puppy begins to jump, falls down and cries.)Mummy, Mummy! Oh, my leg!

Mother: I am here! Oh, my poor little chicken! (She bandages his leg.)Now, now,

Here are some meat for you, my poor little darling! (She goes away.)

(The Cat comes on the stage. Puppy crosses the stage. He cannot walk well.)

Cat: Miaow! Hello, Puppy Little! Are you ill?

Puppy: Hello, Cat. I am not ill. I am strong. I am clever, I can do everything. Mummy and daddy say so.

Cat: And can you say ”miaow’’?

Puppy: I can do everything! Listen: bow-wow!

Cat: But that is not “miaow’’, it is ‘’bow-wow’’! And can you catch birds?

Puppy: Oh, yes, I can! I can do everything!

(The Bird appears.)

Bird: Hello, hello, Puppy Little, can you catch me? Chicken Little, catch me, catch me!

(The Bird flies, the Puppy runs after it, then the Bird flies in the tree. Puppy climbs up and falls down.)

Puppy: (cries) Mummy, mummy, come here! My head, my head! Oh, oh, mummy!

(The Mother runs up to him.)

Mother: Oh, my dear, oh, my poor little sonny-boy! Don’t cry! (She bandages his head.)Here are some meat for you! (Puppy eats it up.) My poor little child! Are you well now? Yes, you are, I see you are. You can eat meat.

(She goes away. The Frog, the Cat and the Bird come up to Puppy Little.)

Frog: I don’t think he is clever.

Bird: I don’t think he is strong.

Cat: What can he do? He can do nothing.

Puppy (stamps his foot): But I am clever, I am strong, I can do everything! Mummy and daddy say so!

Frog: But it is not true!

Cat: No, it is not true!

Bird: You must learn and learn.

Frog: Then you will be clever.

Cat: Then you will be strong.

Bird: Then you will be able to do everything.

Frog, Cat, Bird (together): But now you are only a silly little chicken! Good bye!
