Hints for successful essay writing

THE STRUCTURE OF ESSAY

1. Introduction (Введение) – 2-3 sentences.

In this paragraph we state the topic of an essay. We can address the reader directly with a question to grab his interest.

Clue phrases:

A lot of people think that …

It is popularly believed that…

They say that…

There is a belief (a problem) that …

2. Advantages (Достоинства) – 3-5 sentences.

In this paragraph we speak about pros (the positive points) of the problem. Write about different facts and interesting things that give the problem a good image. We can’t express our own opinion there.

Clue phrases:

On the one hand …

Firstly (First of all) / Secondly / Thirdly

Furthermore, … / Moreover, … / In addition, …

Besides / Not only …, but … as well.

3. Disadvantages (Недостатки) – 3- 5 sentences.

In this paragraph we write about cons (the negative points) of the problem. Write what is bad about the problem (only facts, statistics). We also don’t give our own opinion.

Clue phrases:

On the other hand …

The bad thing is …

However, … / Furthermore, … / Moreover, … / What’s more, …

Besides / Not only …, but … as well.

4. Conclusion (Заключение) – 2-3 sentences.

In this paragraph we finish our essay. We should express our feelings about the problem and give our point of view on the topic.

Clue phrases:

To sum up, …

In conclusion (I should say), …

In my opinion / I (don’t) think (that) / I believe (that) / It seems to me that …
