The history of April Fool's Day

Слайды 2-3

April Fools' Day, sometimes called All Fools' Day, is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are uncertain. It's a day when humor reigns and harmless pranks, practical jokes, and hoaxes are sanctioned. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar.

Ancient cultures celebrated the New Year's Day on or around the 1st April. In medieval time, much of Europe celebrated March 25 as the beginning of the year.

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year's Day to be celebrated 1st January. That year, France adopted the reformed calendar and shifted New Year's day to 1st January. According to a popular explanation, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year's Day on 1st April. Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on "fool's errands" or trying to trick them into believing something false. Eventually, the practice spread throughout Europe.

The British began widely to celebrate this holiday in the 18th century. English, Scottish and French spread it in their American colonies. On 1st April started to make fun of each other and give each other senseless orders, for example, to find and bring sweet vinegar. Usual jokes for April Fool's Day are to say: "Your shoelaces are untied," set back clocks. Everything ends up being when the victim is said: "April Fool» (April's Fool). This day people send funny cards and presents. As a rule, these are some small funny souvenirs. Usually people play tricks with friends and acquaintances. However, there is one particular feature: all the pranks are allowed only until 12 o'clock. But not in Scotland!

In Scotland, April Fools' Day is celebrated for two days. A deceived person is called 'cuckoo '. The second day of celebration has its own name - Day Tail (Taily Day). Everywhere you can find pictures, posters, badges with the slogan 'Kick me' which.

Слайды 4-8.

Mass media also take part in celebrating April Fools' Day. For example, The April 2, 1698 edition of 'Dawks' News-Letter' (a British newspaper) reported that "Yesterday being the first of April, several persons were sent to the Tower Ditch to see the Lions washed." Sending gullible victims to the Tower of London to see the "washing of the lions" (a non-existent ceremony) was a popular prank. It became traditional for this prank to be played on April Fool's Day.

Слайды 9-10.

One of the great media hoaxes of all time was perpetrated on 1st April, 1957 by the BBC, which reported on its news program Panorama that Switzerland was experiencing a bumper spagetti harvest that year thanks to favorable weather and the elimination of the dread "spaghetti weevil." Staged video footage showing happy peasants plucking strands of pasta from tall trees was so convincing that many viewers actually called the network to ask how they could grow their own.

Some of the best-known pranks in recent years were mounted by advertising agencies. In 1996, Taco Bell ran a full-page ad in the 'New York Times' announcing it had purchased the Liberty Bell and would rename it the "Taco Liberty Bell." Burger King pulled off a similar prank in 1998, announcing the rollout of its "Left-Handed Whopper" supposedly designed so that condiments would drip from the right side of the burger rather than the left

Слайд 12.

In 1981 the Guardian reported that scientists at Britain's research labs in Pershore had "developed a machine to control the weather." A series of articles explained that, "Britain will gain the immediate benefit of long summers, with rainfall only at night, and the Continent will have whatever Pershore decides to send it." Readers were also assured that Pershore scientists would make sure that it snowed every Christmas in Britain. A photograph showed a scruffy-looking scientist surrounded by scientific equipment, with the caption, "Dr. Chisholm-Downright expresses quiet satisfaction as a computer printout announces sunshine in Pershore and a forthcoming blizzard over Marseilles."

Слайд 13-14.

On the Internet hoaxes have become such standard fare that April Fools' Day is barely distinguishable from any other, though a few notable pranks stand out and tend to be reposted year after year — e.g., the 1996 announcement that every computer connected to the World Wide Web must be turned off for Internet Cleaning Day, a 24-hour period during which useless "flotsam and jetsam" are flushed from the system.

Слайды 20-30.

April Fools' Day isn't an official holiday, it isn't either the day off. People don't make special dishes to celebrate it. There is only laugh and jokes all day long. I would like to say the famous writer Mark Twain words: 'Let us be thankful for the fools. But for them the rest of us could not succeed'.

Слайд 31-32.

-I've got some presents for you. You should take out a piece of paper from this bag and see what is printed on it. It will be your mark today.
