TEXT 8. LIVING CREATURES.

There are people and many other living creatures, animals of all sorts on the Earth.

Now try to guess what living creature we are going to tell you about.

There is hair on its body, long hair or short hair. This hair is its coat. It has a long or a short tail. It has four legs but no arms: it takes things with its mouth. It has no feet or hands, but four paws at the end of its legs. When it likes you, it gives you its paw.

We hope all of you have guessed what animal it is. It’s a dog, isn’t it? As you know, dogs are our good friends.

Now it’s going to be more difficult to guess. Still try your best.

There is no hair on its body, there are feathers. It has no arms, but two wings. With these wings it flies from tree to tree. Its baby comes out of an egg. In spring, it builds its nest in the branches of trees. We hope you have guessed right: it’s another friend of ours - a bird. Don’t forget to take good care of birds, especially in winter, when there isn’t enough food for them!

Now make another guess: it cannot live out of water. It has no legs; it cannot walk, but it swims in the water of lakes and rivers, seas and oceans.

When a man swims well, we say: “He swims like a.!”

And now look at this living being. It cannot walk! It cannot fly! Why? Because it doesn’t have legs; it does not have wings. It can only crawl on the ground. Poor, poor creature! It’s a snake.

Many people like animals and keep them at home for pleasure: dogs, cats, birds and all sorts of small animals. They are the pets of the children and grown-ups and often part of the family.
