Chekhov is one of the famous Russian
dramatists and
short-story writers.
Chekhov was born in a big family in Taganrog.
He was the 3 rd of six children in the family.
The place where Chekhov was born
In 1868 Chekhov entered the gymnasium, where he wrote his first humorous sketches.
In 1876 his family move to Moscow.
In 1879 he finished the gymnasium and
went to Moscow, too.
Chekhov entered Moscow University,
where he studied medicine.

He worked as a doctor in his lifetime.
In university, Chekhov wrote humorous sketches for comic papers to support his family.
Chekhov developed a style of his own. Though he never gave up writing comic stories, he began working in a more serious manner.
In 1887 "Ivanov", his first play, established Chekhov as a dramatist.
From then, he concentrated on writing plays, as well as short stories.
Chekhov was seriously ill.
He had tuberculosis.
In 1892 he bought the
country house
in Melikhovo.

"The Seagull“ was first staged in the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg.
It was a complete failure.
In 1898 the play was successfully performed in the Moscow Art Theatre.

Olga Knipper, who acted in his play
"The Three Sisters".
