Sightseeing Tour
London is the capital of the United Kingdom. About 7 million people live there. London stands on the River Thames. There are 27 bridges over the Thames in London and 8 tunnels under the river.
The Houses of Parliament
The Houses of Parliament has got two houses- the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The building is famous for its clock Big Ben. You can listen to the debates there.
From the Houses of Parliament you can walk up Whitehall and turn to Downing Street where the British Prime Minister lives at Number 10
Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar square is in the centre of London. The monument to Admiral Nelson is situated in the centre of the square. There are two wonderful fountains in the square. In front of them there is the National Gallery.
St Paul’s Cathedral
It is the greatest of British churches. It was built in the 17 th century by Sir Christopher Wren. Whispering Gallery is situated there.
Westminster Abbey
It is an old beautiful church. It’s nine hundred years old. English kings and queens are crowned there. A lot of famous people were buried there: Newton, Darwin, Dickens, Kipling.
Buckingham Palace
It is the Queen’s home place. Queen Victoria Memorial is in front of it.
The Tower of London
William the Conqueror built the White Tower in the 11 th century to live in it. Later the Tower was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King’s Zoo. The Crown Jewels are kept at the Tower now.
Hyde Park
It has got a lake in the middle. Mothers often take the children for walks and feed the birds. On Sundays you can listen to the speakers at Speaker’s Corner.
Oxford Street
Tourists walk along the street which is famous for the shops and cafes. They buy souvenirs, maps, pictures for their friends.
