Aborigine means first inhabitant. Aborigines of Australia live in the hot, dry desert near the middle of Australia.

Aborigines came to Australia over 40 thousand years ago. Some people think they came in boats, others think there was a land bridge they walked across. No one really knows for sure.

Aborigines did not read or write, so they have no history books to study. They kept track of their past through songs and stories.

They believe in what they call Dreaming. This is when spirits created the world and gave it life. Then the spirits went to live in a rock or tree. These became sacred to the Aborigines.

Every Aborigine had one main job. That was to find food.

Both men and women were expert hunters, and everyone had to know what was safe to eat and what was not.

Aborigines have always been careful in choosing fruits and vegetables. They left some to grow for the next year. Aborigines spent over three – quarters of the day gathering food.

Their weapons consisted of a wood spear, a club and a boomerang. They did not have any metals. Their weapons were made of wood and rocks.

Aborigines did not build houses because they were constantly moving to new places hunting for food. It was so hot that they needed very little shelter.

They started a fire by rubbing two sticks together, and they used this fire to cook their food and keep them warm if the night got chilly.

They did not wear clothes because they had no need for them. It very seldom rained where they lived, but even after a rain they dried very quickly and never got sick from wearing wet clothes.

Water was the most important thing they needed to live. Aborigines became experts in finding water in the driest land.

They knew how to dig to find water, and they also knew how to find water in bodies of frogs, in hollow logs, and in roots of trees.

Aborigines were a good people. They looked after their old people and they loved their children.

They taught their young people all they needed to know to survive in their land.

After a hunt they shared equally with everyone. They had their songs, stories and spirits.

They had artists who carved and drew. They had a hard, but good life. This was the way it was.

People from Great Britain came to Australia over 200 years ago to take their land. They had diseases that killed many Aborigines.

Today there are few true Aborigines left. They work on large sheep and cattle ranches. Their children now attend school.

They have changed and survived, just as they have survived over 40.000 years in the deserts in Australia.
