Children at Work

Last week a national newspaper reported that some children in the south of England were earning more than 50 pounds a week delivering newspapers. There was a terrible fuss. Some people were worried that the children were doing too much work, others felt that it showed that people were getting too greedy at too early an age. Yet it would have been normal for children to have done a full day’s work and more not so long ago. In the nineteenth century, toys, comfortable homes, and schools were only for the very rich. Most children would have been expected to work very hard. If you had gone to school at all, you would have left by the age of eight or nine. In the country you would have worked long hours on the farms. In the cities, life was just as hard. As a young child, you would have gone to work with your parents and slaved alongside dangerous machinery for hours on end. You might even have worked in a coal mine.

Today there are laws which are supposed to stop children from being forced to work. In the UK, no one under the age of thirteen is allowed to work at all; and no one under seventeen is allowed to work in the street - for example, on a market stall. You are not allowed to work before seven in the morning or after seven at night, or to work during school hours. In addition, you-must not work for more than two hours on any school day or on Sunday. But in spite of laws like this, some children are being exploited. Some children work long hours in restaurants and clothes factories or do cleaning jobs, while others are asked to help with their parents’ market stalls. As well as being tiring and interfering with home and school life, work can be dangerous. Children have been killed selling flowers by the side of busy roads and one boy died after cutting himself while working in a butcher’s shop.

Things are getting so bad that London now has a special team of experts looking at the problem. One recent report highlighted the case of Sue. Sue was either absent from school or falling asleep over her desk. When her teachers got worried and looked into her background, they found that she spent most of her time at home making plastic flowers. Sometimes she got up at half past four in the morning in order to help her mother earn enough money for the family.

Experts feel that there is exploitation and that at present the law isn’t strict enough. What do you think?

Listening Comprehension Text

Good Impressions in Job Interviews

It may seem strange that it should be like this but when you have an interview, your education, knowledge and experience may be less important than the overall impression you make on the people interviewing you. Experts disagree about how long it takes to create a really good - or bad impression, but some estimate it’s a few seconds. Many employers check prospective employees for what they call professionalism: this often includes appearance - so make sure you have washed your hair, cleaned your shoes and are wearing the right sort of clothing. Do you know what 80-90% of candidates never remember to do when they go into the interview room? The answer is smile. So make eye-contact and smile as soon as you enter the room but follow the interviewer’s lead on whether or not to shake hands. Wait to be told where to sit and don’t use first names unless the interviewer expects you to.

Try to move in certain ways at an interview - how you move your body or how you sit can indicate what kind of person you are - for example, a certain attitude can make you appear to be shy, or conversely, dependable and honest. It is important to avoid any kind of defensive movement, which may seem strange but it is because doing things like not making eye-contact, or crossing your arms, can seem to be very negative. There are other things that can give a bad impression too, such as turning your body away from the person you're talking to, or constantly touching your clothing or jewellery - all these things give a very bad impression to a person you may be meeting for the first time. You could look as if you don’t want to give a straight answer, and so the interviewer might think you’re impatient - or maybe even completely untrustworthy.

Believe it or not, the colours you choose to wear may also contribute to the overall impression you make. Colour analysts tell us that people wearing red clothes are showing that they have confidence – that’s what the colour signifies - while wearing yellow shows openness. If you choose to wear green, this tells people you’re compassionate, while the colour orange conveys happiness. All these are very positive qualities. However, you might not want to go along to a job interview dressed in all the bright colours of the rainbow, and you will probably choose something more neutral: such as brown, grey, and black. Although a traditional navy blue suit can make you seem conservative, it isn’t a bad thing to wear one for an important job interview, because this colour also suggests that you’re loyal. If it seems a bit dull to you, then add something in another colour to your outfit, perhaps a tie or scarf. Purple is a good choice for this as, according to the experts, this is one of the colours of inspiration.

When the interview is over, remember that people from the company may still be assessing you even after you have left the interview room. So don’t forget to say goodbye to the receptionist or anyone else you spoke to when you arrived. Ignoring someone might cost you the job you’ve tried so hard to get.
