Early life
- His father was a respected farmer, but in 1816 Lincoln`s family lost their lands
- When Lincoln was nine his 34-year-old mother died of milk sickness
- Raised by poor parents, he received less than a year of formal education. His primary means of education was schooling at home using borrowed books and the Bible
Early career and military service
- In 1831 he moved to Illinois, and continued his self-education by borrowing books
- He worked as: a store clerk, a postmaster, a lawyer
- In 1834 he was elected as one of representatives to Illinois State Legislature
Early national politics
- From 1847 to 1849 Lincoln served a single term in Congress
- Then he concentrated on his law practice
- In 1856 he joined the new Republican Party and ran for the US Senate in 1858

Lincoln was shot by a well-known actor John Booth on April 14, 1865 at the Ford`s Theatre during the play Our American Cousin. Lincoln died on the following day.
Abraham Lincoln proved to be a shrewd military strategist and a talented leader; his speeches can be regarded as pieces of oratory art; his Emancipation Proclamation paved the way for slavery’s eventual abolition. Over the years Lincoln’s mythic stature has only grown, and he is widely regarded as one of the greatest presidents in the nation’s history.

From 1959 to 2008 the Lincoln Memorial was shown on the reverse of the United States one cent coin. This was done to mark the 150 th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The memorial also appears on the back of the US 5 dollar bill, the front of which bears Lincoln’s portrait.
