Nature in Australia is unique and interesting . Why is it so? Australia is far away from the other continents. So its flora and fauna doesn't look like any other continent’s . The landscape consists of desert, canyons, and forests. There are the Blue Mountains in the east There is a coral reef – the Great Barrier Reef, at the continent. Its area is larger than the area of the Great Britain. This is the only continent where there are no active volcanoes. Briefly, nature of Australia deserves respect, interest and protection by humans.

Australian deserts Australian eastern coast and northern tropics are frequently flooded in rains. But 70% of the country are deserts or semideserts. The western part of the continent is a huge plateau. Its height is from 300 to 450 m above sea level. Three Australian deserts are located on the Great Western Plateau: the Great Sandy, the Great Victoria Desert and the Gibson Desert. Australian deserts are very dry and cover huge areas. There are ten larger deserts in Australia, in inland Western Australia and Northern Territory, northern South Australia, and south-western Queensland.

Australian Alps is the highest mountain system in Australia. One of the parts of the Great Dividing Range. The highest point - Mount Kosciusko, 2228 m, is also the highest point of the whole of mainland Australia. The longest Murray River in Australia originates on the northwest slope. Several conservation areas have been created on the territory of the Alps, in particular, Mount Buffalo National Park.   Murray

Climate Australia is the most droughty continent in the earth. It is an extremely hot country. Summer months are December, January and February. The average summer temperature is from 20 to 30 degrees above zero. Winter months are June, July and August. The average winter temperature is from 12 to 20 degrees above zero. The most part of the territory lies in tropics. Its southwestern territories lie in subtropics. As droughts are rather common and the amount of rainfall is rather small there are not many rivers in Australia. The largest rivers are the Darling and the Murray.

The isolation of Australia from other continents explains much of the unusualness of Australian plant and animal life. Local animals have their unique peculiarities. There are no predators among the animals. Humans had imported dogs, foxes and other animals. These animals have reduced the population of certain members of the local fauna. Here are the largest number of venomous |ˈvɛnəməs| snakes. But we shall speak about these facts on the next lesson.
