The Problem

Read these three advertisements for credit cards and analyse the features of each card using

the ideas from the table.

AHEAD

Now you can buy what you want. Holding AHEAD card will cost you nothing. We will send you a statement each month and you need only pay us 12 % of your total purchases or a minimum payment of € 20.

We will agree a credit limit with you. Do not worry if you lose your AHEAD card — for a small charge we will insure it so that you have zero liability for unauthorized use.

The number of shops, cafes accepting the AHEAD card is increasing each month. Interest is charged only from the final date for payment shown on your statement. If you need cash, then you can get that too — but we have to charge interest from the date of withdrawl.

Where can you use your ACCES card?

ACCES is the nation`s most widely accepted card and it is expanding rapidly all over the world.

What interest you pay?

If you clear your account when you receive your statement then you pay no interest, otherwise we charge interest at the rate of 2 % over minimum lending rate on your outstanding balance each month.

Can a member of your family share the same account?

You can specify up to three additional people to use your account. Each has a separate credit limit.

What payments do you have to make?

You must pay at least 5% of your month`s balance within 7 days.

Can you get travellers` cheques or cash with your ACCES card?

We can provide other services such as cash withdrawal and purchase of

travellers` cheques — ask for detail of these facilities and also for the small annual charge that we make for the convenience of having ACCER card.

IMPORTANT — MORE PEOPLE HAVE ACCES THAN ANY OTHER CARD.

The following people want a credit card — use your analysis of the three credit cards to discuss and decide which card you think would de best in each case:

Emily is a student in her final year at a commercial college and in 3 months time will start working in her first job as a shop assistant. She hopes to rent a flat to live with a boy friend. But they have no plans to marry at present.

Jennifer and Robert Cline were married 7 months ago. They are finding balancing their budget quite difficult. Jennifer is a waitress. She has a part-time job. Robert is an advertising agent.The family income varies each month, it depends on the amount of overtime that Robert works.

Sarah Bergman is an assurance manager She travels to see clients both in this country and abroad. Because she travels so much she prefers not to carry too much cash but she finds that many hotels are not happy to put extras on the bill.

Julia and Kevin Brown have two daughters who are away from home at university and have to pay most of their children`s living expenses. Kevin has a good job with an international company as Personnel Manager. They have a big flat and a small country cottage where they live in summer.

When you have had your discussion. You will have to report on your analysis of the cards and present your decisions — justifying them if necessary.
