Charming beauty of Ai-Petri
Dear, listeners! We offer you a detailed excursion of visiting the mountain Ai-Petri. The name of the mountain has come from two Greek words: "Ai" - "Saint" means, Petri - Peter means. In the Middle Ages there was Saint Peter's church which hasn't remained up to now, but given the name to the mountain. There are two roads which lead to the mountain: from Yalta and Bakhchisarai. We will use the road from Yalta to visit some interesting sights on the way to Ai-Petri
You see that at the beginning the road is among the low-growing deciduous forests, but now you see some changes: the beautiful slender Crimean pines appear, and with each kilometer they are more and more.
Now we are at the seventh kilometer of the road and the first stop is a beautiful waterfall “Uchan-Su” or “flying water”. The Uchan Su fall is the highest fall of the Crimea. Some researchers consider that the Uchan Su fall is the highest fall in the Europe. The water flow falls from a great height 98 m. The waterfall is very different in each season. In summer it is a quite streamlet running off the cliff and sometimes it even dries up. In spring and autumn, especially after heavy rains, its powerful voice fills all gorges and is carried on kilometer around. In cold winter the waterfall freezes turning into one giant icicles hanging from the rocky ledge to the mountain foot.
From the waterfall the road always goes up through the forest. And now we are at the tenth kilometer of the road. We see that the forest becomes another: the rare tall pines are not vertically, as though they bend in different directions. The reason for this is landslides. This place is called “drunken” grove. Make a deep breath and feel this fresh exciting air of pine grove.
Are you ready to go? Now we are passing by viewing ground “Silver arbor”. We think you`ll be astonished by view from this place. Let`s have a look. The silver arbor in Yalta is located on the beautiful mountain Pendikyul at the height of 865 meters above sea level. It is one of the most favourite and visited places in the city. The arbor with the romantic name has been established in honor of completion of construction of the road Yalta – Ai-Petri – Bakhchisarai in 1894. In winter the arbor always becomes covered with light hoarfrost and even from the city it is visible how it is gracefully poured in sunshine by a thin layer of silver. Exactly from here its name - "A silver arbor" has also appeared. The arbor is traditionally painted in silver color precisely as it was done by the first builders of roads. The silver arbor is the highest point of Yalta. From an arbor the remarkable panorama on the city and vicinities, the most picturesque Yalta amphitheater, the magnificent oak and juniper woods of the cape Martyan, the amazing coast of the Black Sea opens.
Two more kilometers of a way — and the wood comes to the end. Still turn, still... And we are on the plateau Ai-Petri. To the right of the road is a path. It conducts to the rock with the observation platform enclosed with iron fencing. Having climbed a stone ladder, we will appear on Shishko rock. Shishko was an engineer who was leading construction of the road Yalta - Ai-Petri – Bakhchisarai.
And now we are at an altitude of 1182 m above sea level. Near Shishko rock you can see a weather station which exists more than 70 years. In a winter bad weather the station became a shelter for those who got into trouble. In days of the Great Patriotic War partisans found a shelter in the half-ruined building of the station.
There is also a monument on Ai-Petri — a monument to the Yalta partisans who have been killed in battle with fascist aggressors on December 13, 1941.
Now we will go to a desert part of highlands — to the mountain peaks of Ai-Petri. Not far from here there is an amazing cave. Let`s look at it. The cave has two names “Three eyes” and “Ice cave”. It is called so because three entrances look like eyes and it is very cold in it. Let's go down in the cave. You see the 6 meter snowdrift into which visitors throw coins. Over time snow is pressed and turns into ice which already on several meters covered the floor. Ancient hunters stored meat of the killed wild animals here. Thanks to steady temperature inventories perfectly remained. Another interesting fact is that ice from this cave was delivered to the Vorontsov Palace for cooling products and wine. In a cave it is possible to admire the stalactites which are hanging down from a ceiling and the stalagmites rising up.
And here we at the mountain top. Even the most inveterate phlegmatic persons can't but worry at this height where the feeling of flight, infinity and open space comes. From the top of Ai-Petri (1234 m above sea level) the line of the sea horizon is visible at distance about 135 km while from the embankment of Yalta -only 10 km.
The jagged peak of Ai-Petri is a symbol of Yalta. The top of the mountain consists of four large and a number of small peaks. On the one of them there is a spire to raise a flag, on the other there is a cross. The cross was installed during shooting film “In search of the captain Grant”. But nowadays it is considered the symbol of died people on the mountain.
Unfortunately our excursion has come to the end. We hope it was interesting for you and you`ve learned some new information about the Crimea. And we will finish our excursion with descent on the ropeway. The ropeway "Miskhor – Ai-Petri"is one of the most popular and visited tourist objects in the Crimea both for tourists from around the world and for locals. Construction of the ropeway "Miskhor - Ai-Petri" began in 1967 and have been lasted for 20 years. And only on December 31, 1987 the selection committee became the first passengers. The ropeway was stretched on 2980 m from the settlement of Miskhor to the peaks of Ai-Petri. Passengers can enjoy the most beautiful views of the sea and nature within 15 minutes — for such period the cabin is capable to cover the distance from the first station to the last.
Thank you for your attention. Good luck!
